Chapter 4 - The Secret Ryan Kept Hidden

The confrontation on the porch sent my adrenaline into overdrive, but beneath the bravado, a cold knot of dread formed in my stomach. What if Patricia wasn't bluffing? The house Ryan and I had closed on three weeks prior—a charming four-bedroom colonial in Brentwood—was supposed to be our fresh start. I had emptied my personal savings, twenty-five thousand dollars hard-earned from five years of graphic design freelancing, to help cover the closing costs and earnest money.

If Patricia controlled the family trust, where did that leave the house? Did Ryan lie to me about our finances?

I couldn't sit idly by while my entire financial future hung in the balance. I opened my laptop, pulling up the digital escrow files and bank transfers from the closing process. For months, Ryan had handled the bulk of the administrative paperwork through his real estate connections, claiming he could navigate the title company fees faster than I could. I had trusted him implicitly. We were partners. Why would I double-check the man I was marrying?

As I dug into the county records portal, scrolling through deed registries and property tax assessments, my stomach dropped through the floorboards.

The Brentwood property wasn't purchased under our names as joint tenants. The buyer listed on the deed wasn't Ryan Carter and Emily Carter.

It was listed under Carter Holdings LLC, an entity registered under Patricia Carter’s sole name.

My hands began to tremble. My twenty-five thousand dollars hadn't gone toward equity in our family home. The wire transfer record showed my funds had been deposited directly into an escrow account linked to Patricia’s LLC as an ""unsecured capital contribution.""

I had paid twenty-five thousand dollars to renovate and close on a house that belonged entirely to my mother-in-law.

""Oh, Ryan, what have you done?"" I whispered aloud, tears finally spilling over my eyelashes. He hadn't just failed to defend me at dinner; he had allowed his mother to fleece me before we even said our vows. He had let me invest my life savings into an asset I had zero legal claim over, leaving me completely vulnerable to Patricia’s whims.

I grabbed my keys, marched out to my car, and drove straight toward Ryan’s office in downtown Nashville. I wasn't going to hide behind phone calls or text messages anymore. If my marriage was going to burn to ashes, I was going to look him in the eyes while the flames consumed everything.

When I arrived at the sleek glass tower on West End Avenue, the receptionist gave me a startled look. ""Mrs. Carter? Ryan is in a closed meeting with—""

""I don't care,"" I said, walking past her desk with an intensity that made her shrink back.

I pushed open the frosted glass door to Ryan’s private corner office. Ryan was standing by the window, looking pale, hollow-eyed, and completely disheveled, his tie loosened around his collar. Sitting across from him at the conference table was an older man in a charcoal suit, reviewing a thick stack of blue-folder documents.

Ryan turned, his eyes widening in shock. ""Emily? What are you doing here?""

""I’m here to ask you why my twenty-five-thousand-dollar savings account bought a deed for your mother’s LLC,"" I said, my voice echoing like thunder in the soundproof room.
