Chapter 6 - The Altar of Deceit

The music abruptly died, replaced by the rustle of dry leaves and the murmur of one hundred and fifty confused guests.

I walked down the long, grassy aisle between the rows of Honeycrisps, my heels sinking slightly into the rich, dark soil Grandma had cultivated for fifty years.

Tyler looked up, his rehearsed groom smile freezing into an awkward, bewildered grimace as he saw the cream pantsuit and the leather portfolio.

Brooke, standing at the altar in her peach silk dress holding my bouquet of calla lilies, stepped forward with her mouth slightly open. "Nora? What's going on?"

Diane rose from the front row, smoothing her emerald skirt, her voice carrying an edge of sharp, maternal authority. "Nora, darling, is this some kind of modern performance art? Where is your bridal gown?"

I stopped ten feet from the altar, right in front of the rustic wooden cross Tyler had helped set up yesterday.

I reached out, unclipped the wireless lapel microphone from the officiant’s podium, and turned to face the entire assembly.

"Thank you all for coming to Hartwell Orchard," my voice rang through the high-powered speaker towers, clear, resonant, and entirely steady. "Before we begin the ceremony, the groom and his mother have an important business announcement to share with our guests."

Tyler’s face tightened, a sudden, sharp panic flashing across his eyes. "Nora, put the mic down. If you're having second thoughts about the venue, we can talk in private."

"Why talk in private, Tyler?" I asked, looking directly into his face. "You didn't keep things private at 6:04 this morning in your mother's kitchen."

Brooke gasped, her hand flying to her throat as the color drained from her cheeks in an instant.

Diane’s eyes narrowed into slits of pure venom. "Nora, you are embarrassing yourself. Hand the microphone to Tyler and go back to the cottage."

"At 6:04 this morning," I continued into the microphone, ignoring her completely, "Tyler was kissing my maid of honor, Brooke, while celebrating the sale of this forty-one-acre orchard to a luxury housing developer for seven point two million dollars."

The crowd erupted into shocked gasps and hushed whispers.

Several guests in the front row stood up, craning their necks to look between Tyler and Brooke.

"She's having a psychotic episode!" Tyler yelled, stepping toward me with outstretched hands, trying to grab the microphone. "Don't listen to her! The stress of the wedding has completely broken her!"

Before his fingers could touch my sleeve, Arthur Ashworth stepped out from the apple trees, planting his heavy frame directly between Tyler and me.

"Step back, son," Arthur commanded, his deep baritone cutting through the chaos. "Before you add assault to a felony indictment."
