Chapter 5 - The Warrant Executed

Agent Barnes nodded to the two deputies, gesturing toward the front door of my childhood home.
"Execute the warrant. Secure all desktop computers, financial records, and banking correspondence."
My mother began to shriek, fighting against Deputy Miller’s handcuffs as the stainless steel clicked around her wrists.
"You can't go in there! That is private property! Emily, tell them to stop! I am your mother!"
"You stopped being my mother the day you stamped 'Refused' on a letter I wrote from a field hospital in Kandahar," I answered coldly.
"I was recovering from shrapnel wounds, asking if anyone back home was praying for me."
"And you were cashing my military allowance checks to pay your country club membership fees."
The front door opened, and the investigators stepped inside, carrying empty evidence boxes into the house.
Within ten minutes, they emerged carrying a metal lockbox from my father’s master bedroom closet.
Agent Barnes pried open the brass clasp with a flathead screwdriver right on the porch table in plain view of the cameras.
Inside lay stacks of uncashed checks written to the "Emily Parker Rehabilitation Trust" by local church members.
Beside them were credit card bills totaling over eighty thousand dollars in luxury department store purchases.
And beneath the bills was a forged power of attorney form bearing my signature, sloppily traced from my high school diploma.

"That's bank fraud under Title 18, Section 1344," Agent Barnes announced, bagging the document in clear tamper-evident plastic.
"Mr. and Mrs. Parker, you are both under arrest."
