Chapter 6 - Handcuffs In The Sanctuary

The sound of ratcheting metal echoed through the courtroom as the bailiff snapped stainless steel handcuffs around my mother’s wrists.

""Presley! Look at what you are doing to your own mother!"" Eleanor wailed, thrashing against the bailiff’s grip as she was led toward the holding door beside the jury box. ""You are cursed! You hear me? You are no daughter of mine! You ungrateful little bitch!""

I stood perfectly still at the podium, watching her being dragged away. I didn't flinch. I didn't shed a tear. The woman screaming profanities at me wasn't the mother who had read me bedtime stories thirty years ago. That mother had died long ago, replaced by a bitter, calculating monster who was willing to destroy my credit, my career, and my future just to pamper two grown men who refused to grow up.

Bryce was standing frozen, his eyes darting toward the double doors at the back of the courtroom as if contemplating a sprint for freedom.

""Don't even think about running, Mr. Vance,"" Judge Harper warned coldly, noticing his twitchy movements. ""Bailiff, have two additional deputies enter the courtroom immediately.""

Within seconds, two armed sheriff’s deputies stepped through the rear doors, their presence sealing off any possible escape route.

Judge Harper looked down at the documents before her, her pen moving with furious efficiency across the legal ledger. ""This court finds that Case Number 2024-CV-88219 is an absolute sham, conceived in fraud, executed through forgery, and brought before this bench in bad faith. The petition for foreclosure and transfer of title is dismissed with extreme prejudice.""

She looked up, fixing her gaze squarely on Caleb, Bryce, and attorney Gregory Ross.

""Furthermore,"" she continued, her voice resonating with absolute legal fury, ""I am referring this entire file, along with the forged instruments and the municipal employment logs provided by Ms. Presley Vance, directly to the County District Attorney’s Special Prosecutions Unit for criminal investigation. The suspected offenses include felony forgery, filing false legal instruments, grand theft by deception, and conspiracy to commit real estate fraud.""

Mr. Ross looked like he was about to faint. ""Your Honor, I must withdraw as counsel immediately—""

""You aren't withdrawing from anything until the State Bar Association receives my formal disciplinary complaint, Mr. Ross,"" Judge Harper snapped. ""You showed gross negligence by submitting documents signed by a revoked notary without the slightest due diligence. You will answer to the disciplinary board by Friday.""

She turned back to my brothers. ""Caleb Vance. Bryce Vance. You are both ordered to surrender your passports to the clerk’s office by five o’clock today pending formal charges. If you attempt to contact your sister Presley Vance in any manner—in person, by phone, through third parties, or over digital platforms—I will personally issue an emergency protective order and have you locked in the county jail without bond. Do you understand me?""

""Yes, Your Honor,"" Caleb whispered, his voice cracking like a terrified child.

Bryce simply slumped into his chair, staring at the floor in stunned disbelief. His arrogant swagger was completely gone, replaced by the crushing realization that their comfortable, parasitic world had just collapsed entirely.

""Ms. Presley Vance,"" Judge Harper said, her tone softening considerably as she addressed me. ""You are dismissed. And let me commend you for your courage today. Most people would have crumbled under family pressure. You stood your ground, and you brought the truth to light. You are free to go.""

""Thank you, Your Honor,"" I said, bowing my head respectfully.

I gathered my folder from the podium, turned on my heel, and walked down the center aisle. As I pushed open the double doors of Courtroom B, I took the deepest, cleanest breath of air I had taken in ten years.
