Chapter 3 - The Cold Light of Morning

At 6:15 AM, the house smelled of freshly brewed dark roast coffee.
My parents and Megan were dressed in crisp, pastel resort casuals despite the damp Savannah chill outside. Megan wore an ivory cashmere wrap and oversized sunglasses pushed up into her hair, scrolling through her phone with a radiant grin. My father was loading two heavy hard-shell bags into the trunk of Megan's Audi in the driveway, his breath misting in the gray dawn.
Mom hurried into the kitchen, carrying a cosmetics bag and a beach tote. ""Oh, Sarah, you're up! Good girl. The kids are still sleeping. Don't wake them until eight. Noah has his soccer drills at ten sharp, so make sure he has his shin guards on before you leave the house.""
""Where's Greg?"" I asked, leaning against the counter next to a thick black three-ring binder I had assembled overnight.
""Oh, Greg had to stay back in Charlotte for a client dinner last night,"" Megan said dismissively, checking her Apple Watch. ""He's flying into Savannah around noon and driving straight to the resort to meet us. We'll be sipping bellinis poolside by two.""
She reached for the car keys on the counter, flashing me a patronizing wink. ""Try not to let the house burn down while we're gone. And remember, no screen time for Noah after six, or he gets nightmares.""
""Before you leave,"" I said, sliding the black binder across the polished marble island until it bumped against Megan's designer purse, ""you might want to take a look at this.""
Megan glanced down, her brow furrowing in annoyance. ""What is this? If it's a list of dietary questions, I already wrote everything on the fridge whiteboard.""
""Open it,"" I said quietly.
Mom paused, her hand hovering over her tote bag. ""Sarah, we really need to get on the road. The traffic crossing onto the island gets terrible after eight o'clock.""
""Open it, Mom,"" I repeated, my tone dropping all conversational warmth. It was the same tone I used when firing a contractor who had tried to falsify an invoice.
Frowning, Mom stepped forward and flipped open the front cover.
Pasted neatly inside the first clear plastic sleeve was a high-resolution printout of my bank statements. Yellow highlighter marked every single non-medical charge over the past two years: the luxury boutiques, the high-end salon treatments, the four-figure payments toward Megan's luxury SUV, and the monthly automatic withdrawals that were supposed to be paying their property taxes but were actually flowing straight into Megan's country club account.
Mom's face drained of color so fast I thought she might faint against the cabinetry. ""Sarah... what is this?""
""That's forty-seven thousand, eight hundred and twenty dollars,"" I said evenly. ""That is the exact amount you and Megan have stolen from my personal and business accounts over the last twenty-four months under the guise of 'medical emergencies' and 'property taxes.'""
Megan scoffed, her face turning bright red with indignation. ""Stolen? How dare you! Mom has access to that card! You gave it to her! We are a family, Sarah! You make six figures sitting on your butt in Seattle drawing pictures on a computer while I'm here taking care of Mom and Dad every single day!""
""Taking care of them?"" I stepped closer to the island, pointing to page twelve of the binder. ""On August 14th, you charged two thousand dollars for VIP tickets to an outdoor music festival on my card while Mom was supposedly recovering from bronchitis. On October 2nd, you took a weekend shopping trip to Charleston and put four hotel rooms on my account. Mom didn't use that card, Megan. You did. With her permission.""
Dad walked in from the garage, wiping his damp hands on a towel. ""What's going on in here? We need to go, girls. The car is packed.""
""Sarah is having an absolute psychotic breakdown,"" Megan shouted, slamming the binder shut. ""She's printing out our private family expenses and calling us thieves! On Christmas Eve!""
Mom was trembling, her knuckles white as she gripped the edge of the counter. ""Sarah... we were going to pay you back. Things have just been tight with Dad's retirement adjustments, and Megan needed help with the kids' tuition...""
""You weren't going to pay me back, Mom,"" I said, looking her dead in the eyes. ""Because you didn't even think I noticed. You thought I was your personal ATM who was too desperate for your approval to ever push back. You thought you could lure me across the country under the lie that you were sick and missed me, just so I could be your unpaid domestic staff while you spent eight thousand dollars of my money on an oceanfront suite.""
Megan grabbed her purse, sneering at me with pure venom. ""You know what? Keep your pathetic binder. We don't have to listen to this toxic garbage. We're going to Palmetto Crown, and when we get back on Friday, you'd better have your bags packed and be out of this house.""
May you like
She turned toward the door, pulling Mom by the arm. ""Come on, Mom. Dad, let's go.""
""Have a wonderful trip,"" I said calmly, taking a sip from my mug. ""Let me know how the weather is at the resort.""
