Chapter 4 - The Chicago Meltdown

Forty-eight hours after our disappearance, Chicago was descending into chaos. Alexander hadn't slept a wink. Stubble covered his hollow jaw, and his designer suit was rumpled. He paced the glass-walled boardroom of the Moretti Tower on Michigan Avenue, watching the city below with bloodshot, manic eyes.

"Report!" he barked as Marcus entered the room.

"Boss... the port authority in Newark just seized four of our cargo containers," Marcus reported hesitantly, wiping nervous sweat from his brow. "Federal customs agents boarded our freight ships in Long Beach and Savannah simultaneously. They found unregistered tactical rifles in two containers. Boss, that’s twenty million dollars in seized inventory within three hours."

"How?" Alexander hissed, turning around violently. "The port directors have been on our payroll for twenty years! Who authorized the raids?"

"Not the government," Marcus whispered. "The private port operator. Sterling Maritime Logistics. They terminated all commercial lease agreements with Moretti Shipping with immediate effect. They cited breach of maritime integrity. When our lawyers tried to challenge the injunction in court, the presiding judge threw the case out in ten minutes."

Alexander frowned, the name ringing a distant, ominous bell. "Sterling Maritime? That’s Victor Sterling's group. The recluse billionaire based out of Miami. Why the hell is Victor Sterling intervening in Chicago syndicate business? We have no beef with Sterling!"

Before Marcus could answer, the boardroom doors flew open with a bang. Sophia Rossi stormed into the room, wearing a designer trench coat and oversized sunglasses, her face twisted in hysterical fury. Behind her trailed Richard Moretti, looking uncharacteristically flustered.

"Alexander!" Sophia shrieked, slamming her designer leather handbag on the conference table. "The doctors at Saint Jude’s just called me! The cryogenic transport team was intercepted at O'Hare airport this morning! Where is the cord blood? My daughter Maya is scheduled for chemotherapy pre-conditioning tomorrow! Without those stem cells, she won't survive the month!"

Alexander rubbed his temples, a migraine pounding violently behind his eyes. "What do you mean intercepted? Father, you said the samples were locked down!"

"They were!" Richard snapped, his face flushed purple. "A team of elite federal marshals presented a court order claiming the biological material was obtained without legal maternal consent! Claire filed an emergency federal restraining order and custody injunction from Florida! She claimed the tissue was extracted illegally under duress!"

"Claire?" Sophia sneered, laughing mockingly. "That pathetic, quiet little charity case you married? You let that mouse steal my daughter's life-saving cure? Alexander, you promised me! You said she was an idiot who would do whatever you said!"

"Watch your tongue, Sophia!" Alexander roared, stepping into her space with such predatory rage that even the haughty New York heiress took a step back. "You don't talk about my wife that way!"

"She isn't your wife anymore, idiot!" Sophia snapped back. "She left you! She took your son, she took your daughter, and she took the cure! Carmine Rossi will burn Chicago to the ground if Maya dies because of your stupid domestic melodrama!"

Alexander ignored her screams. His attention was caught by the 65-inch television screen mounted on the boardroom wall. The ticker on CNBC suddenly flashed breaking news:

*BREAKING: RECLUSIVE BILLIONAIRE VICTOR STERLING NAMES SOLE HEIR TO $14 BILLION MARITIME EMPIRE.*

Alexander grabbed the remote and turned up the volume.

The screen cut to a live press conference broadcast from a private yacht club in Palm Beach. Stepping up to the podium was Victor Sterling, looking regal and commanding. But it wasn't Victor who made the oxygen vanish from Alexander’s lungs.

Walking up beside him was Claire.

She wore an impeccably tailored emerald silk dress, her long chestnut hair falling in graceful waves over her shoulders. She looked breathtaking, powerful, and utterly out of Alexander’s reach. Around her neck was a diamond choker worth more than the entire Moretti Tower. Lily stood beside her in a delicate yellow sundress, smiling radiantly, while Dominic held Noah in his arms.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Victor Sterling announced into the microphones, his voice booming with authority. "For twenty-four years, my family has endured the tragedy of separation. Today, I am proud to formally introduce my daughter and sole legal heir, Claire Sterling, and my grandchildren, Lily and Noah Sterling. From this day forward, Claire holds full executive voting power across all Sterling Maritime assets and subsidiaries."

In the Chicago boardroom, complete, suffocating silence descended.

Alexander dropped the television remote. The plastic shattered on the floor.

"Claire... Sterling?" Alexander murmured, his voice cracking like breaking ice.

Sophia’s mouth fell open in shock. Richard Moretti sank heavily into an executive leather chair, his silver cane slipping from his trembling fingers.

The woman they had treated like a helpless, disposable incubator was the sole princess of the largest private maritime empire on the American continent. And Alexander hadn't just lost his wife—he had just declared war on a titan.
