Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Ambush

By nine o'clock the next morning, the financial district of Chicago was operating under a deceptive calm. I wore an ivory tailored suit, my dark hair pulled back into a severe, sleek bun, diamond studs in my ears that Arthur had gifted me when I turned twenty-one. There was no trace left of the docile housewife who poured coffee for the Moretti capos.
Accompanied by Marcus and a team of four corporate litigators whose fees could bankrupt a mid-sized corporation, I entered the glass tower of Bennett Financial on LaSalle Street.
Vincent was already waiting on the executive floor.
He was pacing like a caged panther in the marble reception area, his eyes bloodshot, his designer tie loosened, dark shadows bruising the skin beneath his eyes. When the elevator doors opened and he saw me flanked by armed security and high-powered attorneys, he froze.
""Claire,"" he snapped, taking a stride toward me. ""What the hell is this? What is your game?""
Marcus stepped between us instantly, his broad frame blocking Vincent’s path with the immovable weight of a brick wall.
""Back up, Mr. Moretti,"" Marcus warned quietly. ""You are not in your basement club. One more step toward Miss Bennett, and security will throw you out of the window.""
Vincent’s jaw twitched. He looked past Marcus, his eyes wild with anger and confusion. ""Miss Bennett? You’re my wife, Claire! You carry my name!""
""Not for much longer,"" I said, walking past him into the main boardroom. ""Sit down, Vincent. You have precisely ten minutes before the markets open, and every second you waste screaming like a child costs your family another million.""
He followed me inside, slamming the double doors behind him. He looked around the vast, oak-paneled room, his gaze catching the portrait of my great-grandfather hanging behind the head of the table. The sudden realization of where he was standing seemed to finally drain the color from his face.
""Your grandfather... Arthur Bennett is really your grandfather?"" Vincent whispered, his arrogant swagger evaporating into sheer disbelief. ""Why didn't you tell me?""
""Because when I met you, I wanted someone who loved me for who I was, not for the empire behind my back,"" I said, taking my seat at the end of the table. ""And for a while, you pretended very well. But the moment you felt comfortable, you brought your childhood pet into our marriage. You let Sophia mock me at family dinners. You let your mother treat me like an interloper. And two nights ago, you took her to a hotel suite while telling me you were drinking with old schoolmates.""
""I told you, nothing happened!"" Vincent pleaded, leaning over the table, his hands trembling. ""Sophia was crying. Her father’s business was going under, she had too much tequila, and she made a pass at me! I rejected her, Claire! I swear on my mother’s life, I didn't sleep with her!""
""You didn't pull away when she kissed you in the elevator, Vincent. I watched the security tape with the hotel manager while you were still upstairs.""
Vincent choked on his words, his face flushing crimson.
""And even if you didn't sleep with her,"" I continued, voice dropping to an icy monotone, ""you disgraced me publicly. You disrespected my position as your wife. And worse for you—you humiliated the Bennett bloodline.""
I slid a single legal document across the glass surface.
""Pier 41's lease has been revoked due to environmental zoning violations discovered this morning. The Canadian transport ship carrying your steel—and whatever is hidden beneath it—will be redirected to a federal inspection dock within the hour.""
May you like
Vincent’s breath hitched. He lunged for the paper, scanning the legal notice as panic flared in his eyes. ""No. No, no, no. That shipment... Claire, that's ten million dollars! If the feds touch that cargo, I’m facing twenty years. The syndicate will kill me before the marshals even issue a warrant!""
""Then you had better go home and ask Sophia to help you pay the bail,"" I said, standing up and buttoning my jacket. ""Because the Bennett family is officially foreclosing on you.""
