Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Queen of Chicago

Six months later, the Chicago spring had washed away the harsh winter cold, replacing the frost with blooming magnolias along Michigan Avenue.

The grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel was filled with the city's true elite: governors, senators, philanthropists, and corporate titans. The Moretti name was already a fading rumor, a cautionary tale whispered in back rooms about what happens when street-level arrogance crosses old-money sovereignty. Vincent was living in a modest two-bedroom apartment near Buffalo, managing freight manifests for an obscure shipping line, stripped of his guards, his cars, and his pride. Sophia had vanished entirely, lost to the neon underworld of debt collectors and broken dreams.

I stood on the mezzanine balcony overlooking the gala, holding a glass of vintage champagne. I wore a breathtaking midnight-blue backless gown, my hair cascading in soft waves over my shoulders, Arthur’s diamond necklace sparkling at my throat.

""You look like you own the city, Claire,"" a deep, warm voice spoke beside me.

I turned to see Julian Vance, Marcus’s nephew and the newly appointed Chief Executive of Bennett Maritime. He was thirty-two, sharp, fiercely intelligent, with an effortless confidence that came from competence rather than underworld bravado. Unlike Vincent, Julian had never needed to carry a gun or threaten people to command a room; his mind was the most dangerous weapon in Cook County.

""I don't own it, Julian,"" I replied with a faint smile, clinking my glass against his. ""I just manage the people who think they do.""

""The port reports came in this afternoon,"" Julian said, leaning against the marble railing beside me. ""Trade efficiency is up forty percent. The waterfront hasn't seen a single violent incident in four months. The captains are terrified of you, but they're richer than they've ever been, so they consider you a saint.""

""Fear is useful, but profit breeds loyalty,"" I said, watching the couples waltzing on the polished floor below. ""My grandfather taught me that.""

""Your grandfather is downstairs telling the Mayor that you're the best decision this family has made in fifty years,"" Julian chuckled, his dark eyes looking at me with undisguised admiration. ""And for once, I completely agree with the old lion.""

A gentle breeze drifted in from the lake, carrying the fresh scent of spring and new beginnings. For three years, I had walked through life walking on eggshells, constantly worrying about pleasing a man who was incapable of valuing what he had.

Now, standing tall under the chandeliers of my own family's world, I felt completely, beautifully whole. I was no longer Claire Moretti, the neglected mafia wife.

I was Claire Bennett. Sovereign, untouchable, and finally free."
