Chapter 9 - The Garden of Rebirth

By the following autumn, the vineyard was heavy with deep purple grapes ready for the annual harvest.

The villa had become a sanctuary for women fleeing domestic violence and human trafficking across southern Europe, fully funded by the trust Dante and I had established together.

Dozens of young women and their children lived safely in the restored cottages surrounding the main estate, learning artisan culinary arts, agriculture, and business management.

On a warm Saturday afternoon, the estate gardens were alive with laughter, accordion music, and the clinking of wine glasses.

I sat on a stone bench beneath an ancient olive tree, watching a group of toddlers chasing yellow butterflies across the lawn.

Dante walked over, holding two glasses of sparkling mineral water with fresh mint, and sat beside me.

"You look peaceful today, Claire," he murmured, handing me a glass.

"I am peaceful, Dante," I smiled, leaning back against the rough stone wall.

"For three years in Chicago, I walked on eggshells, constantly terrified of making a mistake, constantly begging to be seen."

Dante reached out, his warm, calloused fingers gently covering mine on the stone bench.

His touch was steady, reassuring, and completely devoid of the suffocating, possessive demands that had defined my marriage to his brother.

"You never had to beg, Claire," Dante whispered, looking into my eyes with an honesty that took my breath away.

"A woman with your fire deserves a partner who builds an empire around her, not one who locks her in a burning room."

I looked at his rugged face, seeing the small scars that told the story of a man who had fought his way through the shadows to protect what was good.

Over the past year, Dante had never pushed, never demanded, and never crossed a boundary.

He had simply stood by my side like an unbreakable shield, giving me the space and time to rebuild my shattered spirit from the ground up.

"Do you ever miss Chicago?" I asked softly, tilting my head toward his.

"Not for a single second," Dante answered without hesitation.

"Everything that matters to me in this world is sitting on this bench."

A sudden, sweet flutter bloomed in my chest—a feeling I thought had died forever on that cold October night.

I squeezed his hand, resting my head against his broad shoulder as the afternoon sun cast golden ribbons of light across our peaceful valley.
