Chapter 5 - The Unspoken Debt

The stillness in the living room was punctuated only by the low hum of the refrigerator. Vincent remained on his knees, an absurd, surreal sight for anyone who knew the ruthless patriarch of the Moretti syndicate.
""Listen to me for five minutes,"" Vincent begged, his voice hoarse, stripped of every shred of pride. ""After that, if you still want me to walk out that door and never see you again, I swear on my mother's grave I will do it. But you deserve the truth.""
I crossed my arms tightly, refusing to sit, refusing to offer him a drop of comfort. ""Five minutes, Vincent. Not a second more.""
He swallowed hard, keeping his hands flat on his thighs, his dark eyes fixed on mine. ""Sophia’s late husband was Julian Vance. You remember Julian?""
A cold shiver traced my spine. Julian Vance had been Vincent’s chief of security, his right-hand man, and his closest friend since childhood. Julian had died in a violent car bombing seven years ago—an assassination attempt that had been targeted at Vincent.
""Julian took the ignition key that night,"" Vincent said, his voice trembling with a grief he had carried in silence for years. ""The bomb was meant for me. He started the car outside the warehouse, and he was vaporized in seconds. Sophia was six months pregnant with Mia. As Julian was dying in the trauma bay, his lungs shredded, he held my hand and made me swear an oath. He said, 'Keep them alive, Vince. Don't let them pay for my loyalty.'""
I stared at him, my heart hammering an erratic rhythm against my ribs.
""I gave a dying man my word,"" Vincent continued, a single tear breaking free and cutting a clean path through the stubble on his cheek. ""Sophia had severe postpartum psychosis after Julian died. She was suicidal, paranoid, convinced that Julian’s killers were coming to finish off Mia. Every time she called me, it wasn't about a cough or a fever, Claire. It was an episode. She was threatening to end her life and take the baby with her.""
I stood frozen, the breath trapped in my throat.
""Why didn't you tell me?"" My voice was barely a whisper. ""Why keep it a secret? I was your wife!""
""Because Julian’s enemies were watching,"" Vincent said desperately, leaning forward. ""The syndicate had a mole. If anyone knew that Julian had hidden an encrypted ledger containing the names of corrupt federal judges and cartel leaders—a ledger he left solely for Mia's trust fund—Sophia and the child would have been slaughtered. I had to make it look like Sophia was my mistress, my indulgence, something casual and unimportant, so no one would interrogate her about Julian's files.""
He slammed his fist against his chest, right over his heart.
""I was an arrogant, blind fool, Claire! In my obsession to keep a dead man's family alive, to win an invisible war in the shadows, I forgot the woman standing right in front of me! I thought you were invincible. I thought your quiet strength would always be there. I told myself, 'Claire is strong, Claire understands, Claire will never leave.' And while I was busy playing savior to a ghost, I neglected the only living soul who actually made me human.""
Vincent looked toward Leo, his chest hitching in a strangled sob.
""That day in the clinic... I didn't bypass you to hurt you. Sophia had found a tracker under Mia's stroller that morning. She was hyperventilating, having a full psychotic break in the car. I had to get her into an isolated room with a physician who was cleared for cartel clearance before she screamed in front of the press. When I saw you sitting there... God forgive me, Claire, I thought you just had a mild seasonal flu. I thought I could make it up to you that evening with dinner and flowers. I didn't see the fever in your eyes. I didn't listen.""

He dropped his head, his broad shoulders shaking violently as he wept.
""When I came home and found your wedding ring on the counter... and then found the medical report at the hospital stating you had nearly died from respiratory failure... I went insane. I burned half the city looking for you. I tore down the men who planted that car bomb. I secured Julian’s ledger. I set Sophia and Mia up in a secure compound in Switzerland under federal protection. I solved everything. But when I came back to our home... it was empty. You were gone. And my punishment was living every single day knowing I was the monster who drove you away.""
