Chapter 3 - The Truth in the Vault

The heavy oak double doors of the estate swung open, not for Arthur and Beatrice, but for Ethan and me. The warmth of the grand foyer hit my face, smelling of polished cedar, expensive lilies, and the faint, haunting scent of David’s favorite cologne that still lingered in the air.

Beatrice stood glued to the Persian rug in the center of the hall, her silk coat trembling. Two sheriff’s deputies stood by the entrance, watching her every twitch like hawks. When she saw me walk inside without asking for permission, the veins in her slender neck bulged with incandescent rage.

""You will rot in prison for this, Claire!"" she shrieked, spitting on the Italian marble floor between us. ""You manipulated my son while he was doped up on morphine! You forced him to sign forged documents! We paid for your wedding! We paid for that useless master’s degree you never used! You came from absolute dirt, and you will go back to dirt before I let you steal our dynasty!""

""Beatrice, shut your mouth!"" Arthur hissed, though his own panic was obvious. He was leaning against the grand mahogany desk in the study, his phone pressed against his ear, listening to the automated tone indicating his corporate American Express Centurion card had been canceled. His hand was shaking so badly he nearly dropped the receiver. ""Marcus Vance, this is illegal! You cannot lock someone out of their primary residence without a sixty-day notice under state housing regulations!""

Marcus Vance stepped into the study, stepping directly into Arthur’s personal space without blinking. He placed a laminated sheet of paper directly on the desk.

""Under ordinary tenancy laws, you would be correct, Arthur,"" Marcus said coolly. ""However, pursuant to Section 4B of the Meridian Acquisition Agreement which you personally signed and notarized on October 14, 2019, this property was reclassified as a corporate guest quarters. Your residency was granted purely at the pleasure of the trust’s managing officer. The managing officer sits right behind you.""

Arthur spun around to face me. For sixteen years, I had lowered my gaze whenever this man raised his voice. I had tolerated his snide comments about my working-class parents, swallowed his insults about my cooking, and endured his dismissive laughter when David chose to spend holidays with our kids instead of attending his corporate fundraisers.

I looked Arthur dead in the eyes. I didn't blink.

""Ethan,"" I said softly, without breaking eye contact with my father-in-law. ""Take your sister upstairs to her room. Pack your clothes, your laptop, and your father’s watch from the dresser. Everything else can stay here for now.""

Ethan nodded firmly. He had grown up in an instant out in that freezing rain. He grabbed Maya’s hand and led her gently up the curved staircase, completely ignoring his grandmother’s venomous scowl.

""Now,"" I continued, turning to Sheriff Caldwell. ""Beatrice Hayes is currently in possession of stolen personal property. At David's wake this morning, she physically assaulted me and removed my wedding ring from my hand by force.""

Beatrice turned pale, her hand instinctively flying to the pocket of her coat. ""It’s a Hayes heirloom! It belonged to his great-aunt! It belongs to the direct bloodline, not an outsider!""

""It was purchased by David in 2010 with his personal earnings,"" Marcus stated, opening another folder. ""We have the original receipt, the appraisal certificate, and the insurance rider registered solely under Claire Hayes’s name. Deputy, please search the suspect or charge her on the spot with grand larceny and physical battery.""

Sheriff Caldwell stepped forward, his expression hard as granite. ""Hand over the ring, Mrs. Hayes. Don't make this uglier than it already is.""

Beatrice’s lower lip trembled with humiliation. She looked at Arthur for help, but Arthur was staring blankly at his computer screen, watching system alerts pop up across his monitor: ACCESS DENIED. USER ACCOUNT REVOKED.

With a choked, strangled cry, Beatrice thrust her hand into her coat pocket, pulled out the sparkling platinum band, and threw it violently at my feet. It clicked against the marble, rolling until it hit the toe of my damp boot.

I knelt down, picked up the ring, and slipped it slowly back onto my bruised, swollen finger. The cold metal felt like a shield.

""That’s one item accounted for,"" I whispered, rising to my feet. ""Now, Marcus... let's open the lower study vault. I believe Arthur has been storing some interesting corporate bookkeeping that the IRS has been looking for.""

Arthur’s face lost every remaining drop of color. He staggered backward, his knee catching the edge of the leather chair. ""No... Claire, please. Not the vault.""
