Chapter 4 - The Paper Trail

The room went completely dead silent. The only sound was the faint hum of the HVAC system circulating filtered air through the executive suite.

Tim stared at the paper in front of him. His hands remained frozen on the mahogany surface. ""Terminated? For cause? On what grounds? That’s absurd. I have an airtight executive contract. If you fire me without just cause, the golden parachute clause entitles me to three years of base salary plus the median quarterly bonus. That's over four million dollars!""

""There is no parachute when the pilot deliberately cuts the fuel lines,"" Arthur replied evenly. ""Please turn to page four of the dossier in front of you.""

Bryce shifted nervously against the credenza. Diane looked between Arthur and my father, her face turning a mottled shade of red. ""Paul, this is blatant retaliation! You can’t penalize my son just because he didn't want to be married to your spoiled daughter anymore! We have rights! I am the Director of Human Resources for this entire regional office!""

""You were the director, Diane,"" my father said, turning his cold gray eyes toward her. ""Until our internal ethics hotline received seven independent reports regarding unauthorized override of vendor background checks. Would you like to explain why you personally waived the mandatory disclosure forms for Apex Hauling Solutions?""

Diane blinked, the color instantly draining from her face. ""I... that was standard operational discretion. Tim assured me—""

""Tim assured you that his little brother would kick back fifteen percent of every inflated invoice back into an offshore account in the Caymans,"" my father cut in, his voice rising just enough to command absolute terror. ""We pulled the server logs last night. Bryce, your IP address at your private apartment was used to submit billing invoices for thirty-four freight runs that never occurred. Our GPS tracking data on the trucks confirms that while Apex was billing us eighty thousand dollars a week for regional hauling, those trailers were parked behind an abandoned warehouse in Rockford.""

Bryce swallowed hard, suddenly staring at his shoes. ""Tim told me it was an advance. He said Paul authorized a private restructuring fund...""

""Shut up, Bryce!"" Tim roared, slamming both fists onto the table. His polished executive demeanor shattered instantly, revealing the feral, cornered creature underneath. ""He’s bluffing! You don’t have proof of any offshore accounts! You’re grasping at straws because you’re bitter!""

""We don't need to grasp at straws, Tim,"" I spoke up, my voice steady, clear, and ringing through the room. ""The forensic accounting team spent the last three weeks working with the Federal Bureau of Investigation's white-collar crime division. You thought you were locking me out of my life today. But the only door closing is the one behind you.""
