Chapter 6 - Marissa’s Public Humiliation

When Daniel returned to Elm Street empty-handed, Marissa was waiting on the porch, bags packed, hoping that Daniel had successfully charmed me into restoring their cash flow. When she saw his vacant, defeated expression and the eviction notice clutched in his fist, her panic curdled into pure, unadulterated venom.
""If she won't give us the money, I will take it from her reputation,"" Marissa hissed.
That evening, Marissa took to Facebook and local community groups. She posted a tear-stained selfie with Evan, accompanied by a long, dramatic essay:
“I never thought I would have to post something so painful. My brother’s wife, Nora, has abandoned our family after learning she was pregnant. She has maliciously frozen our family accounts, leaving my teenage son stranded without tuition money and throwing our elderly, sick mother out onto the streets! She has millions hidden in shell corporations while letting an innocent boy lose his high school diploma out of pure spite! Please share this! Expose this heartless monster!”
Because Marissa had a wide circle of gossiping socialite acquaintances, the post caught fire within hours. Local community pages shared it. People who didn't know the full story began leaving vile comments on my dormant social media accounts, calling me a wicked step-aunt and a narcissistic sociopath.
By morning, the post had garnered over two thousand shares. Marissa felt invincible. She actually called Daniel into the kitchen, smirking. ""Watch. By noon, she’ll be begging us to take a settlement just to save her business reputation. Tech founders hate bad PR.""
At ten in the morning, Marissa's front door bell rang.
It wasn't an apology delivery. It was a process server flanked by two private investigators.
They handed Marissa a thick manila envelope containing an emergency cease-and-desist order and a formal civil summons for malicious defamation, libel per se, and public harassment, seeking five hundred thousand dollars in compensatory damages.
Attached to the lawsuit was an exhibit binder that made Marissa’s knees buckle.
It contained seven years of itemized receipts: every wire transfer to St. Jude’s Academy labeled “Evan Vance Tuition - Paid by Nora Lin Vance,” every lease payment for Evelyn’s home, every medical invoice, and even the receipts for Marissa’s car repairs. Along with it was an audio recording from Friday night's dinner—which had been captured by my home security hub installed on the kitchen counter—clearly capturing Marissa calling me a penniless parasite, Daniel demanding a divorce, and Marissa laughing, telling me not to come back begging.
Simultaneously, my attorney issued a public press release through the regional legal ledger, publishing the exact financial breakdown with all account numbers redacted, alongside a simple statement:
“Mrs. Nora Lin Vance has unilaterally funded the living, educational, and medical expenses of the extended Vance family to the sum of six hundred and forty thousand dollars over seven years. Mrs. Vance has no legal or moral duty to subsidize adult relatives who defame her character while demanding her wealth. Any further public falsehoods will result in immediate wage garnishment and asset seizures.”
The internet turned on Marissa in an instant.
The very comments that had praised her as a grieving mother transformed into a barrage of merciless ridicule.
“Wait, so the sister-in-law paid for your kid’s private school for seven years and you called her a parasite?!”
“You got exposed in 4K!”
“Get a job and pay for your own son, you entitled leech!”

By noon, the headmaster of St. Jude's issued a formal letter to Marissa: Evan was officially expelled for bringing disrepute to the academy’s code of conduct through public scandal, and the board demanded the immediate return of all school property.
