Chapter 2 - The Monday Morning Panic

By Monday morning, I had checked into a luxurious extended-stay penthouse suite overlooking the harbor downtown. The room was flooded with natural sunlight, filled with fresh white lilies, and silent. For the first time in years, I didn't have to wake up at six in the morning to prepare fresh squeezed orange juice, poach eggs for Daniel, or field frantic morning texts from Marissa demanding that I pick up Evan’s dry cleaning.

My private obstetrician, Dr. Chen, had examined me at nine. The ultrasound showed a strong, steady heartbeat flickering on the monitor like a tiny star. Hearing that rapid pulse had washed away every lingering doubt in my soul. I wasn't just defending my own dignity anymore; I was protecting the little life growing inside me.

At eleven-fifteen, my phone lit up on the glass coffee table.

It was Marissa. I let it ring until it went to voicemail. Ten seconds later, she called again. Then a third time.

Finally, a furious text pinged on my screen: Where the hell are you? Pick up your damn phone! Evan just got pulled out of his AP Calculus class and sent to the headmaster's office like a common delinquent! They’re saying his tuition bounced! Did you forget to run Daniel's card before you threw your little temper tantrum?!

I didn't reply. I simply watched the screen.

Two minutes later, Daniel's name flashed across the display. I tapped speaker and set the phone down.

""Nora!"" Daniel's voice was sharp, breathless, and laden with irritation. ""What kind of sick game are you playing? I'm in the middle of a client presentation and Marissa has called me five times in hysterics. Why hasn't Evan's tuition cleared? Go online and fix the transfer right now.""

""Hello to you too, Daniel,"" I said evenly, sipping a mug of warm peppermint tea. ""If you check our text history from Friday night, you agreed that our marriage was over. You told me you would send the divorce papers. Did you draft them yet?""

""Don't change the subject!"" he snapped, slamming a door on his end—probably retreating into an empty conference room. ""This is an innocent kid's future! Evan is up for early admissions at Dartmouth. If his transcript gets flagged for non-payment, it will ruin his life! Whatever childish spat you have with my sister doesn't give you the right to mess with my nephew's schooling. Use the household card and pay it. Now.""

""I can't do that, Daniel,"" I replied calmly.

""Why the hell not?""

""Because the card was canceled forty-eight hours ago. And the tuition was never paid from your account. It came from mine. Every single semester for the past seven years.""

There was a dead, suffocating silence on the other end of the line. I could hear the faint hum of Daniel’s office air conditioning.

""What are you talking about?"" he scoffed, though a tremor of unease cracked his bravado. ""You don't make that kind of money. You write lifestyle articles and manage small websites. I am the provider in this house!""

""You earn ninety thousand dollars before taxes, Daniel,"" I said, peeling back the illusion layer by layer. ""Your car note is fourteen hundred a month. Your wardrobe and golf club membership cost three thousand a month. Evan's tuition is ten thousand a year, his boarding fees are six thousand, your mother's duplex is forty-two hundred a month, and her medical aides cost another three thousand. You do the math. Did you honestly believe your paycheck was magically multiplying like loaves and fishes?""

""You're lying,"" he whispered, his voice suddenly hollow. ""You're just trying to make yourself look important because you walked out.""

""Call the bank, Daniel. Check your wallet. Try to swipe that sleek black card for your lunch today. See what the terminal tells you.""

Before he could answer, I hung up.

I took a bite of my fruit salad, leaning back against the plush velvet sofa. I knew exactly what was about to happen. A house of cards doesn't collapse one room at a time; when the foundation vanishes, the whole structure drops like a stone.
