Chapter 5 - Tropical Paradise

Down in Key West, Dylan Mills was having the time of his life—at least for the first forty-eight hours.

He and Courtney had spent Saturday afternoon drinking craft margaritas at an open-air bar off Duval Street, laughing loudly about old professors, mutual friends who had gotten fat, and inside jokes that had aged poorly over ten years.

Courtney looked stunning. She wore sundresses that showed off her gym-toned shoulders, tossed her blonde hair back when she laughed, and touched Dylan’s forearm every time she wanted his attention.

""I can't believe you actually got away,"" Courtney purred, leaning across the small wooden high-top table as the band began playing a reggae cover of an eighties rock song. ""I honestly thought Amanda would chain you to the radiator. She always seemed so... possessive.""

Dylan took a large gulp of his beer, feeling a sudden, inexplicable prickle of unease at the base of his neck. ""Amanda isn't possessive. She just... worries. She’s practical.""

""Practical is another word for boring, Dylan,"" Courtney laughed, tilting her cocktail glass against his. ""Look at you. You own a thriving business, you're handsome, you have an incredible energy. You shouldn't be trapped in a quiet house in Worthington talking about mortgage rates and lawn fertilizer every night. You deserve excitement.""

Dylan smiled, letting the compliment wash over him, but for some reason, the beer tasted slightly sour.

Throughout Sunday, he found himself checking his phone every twenty minutes.

Amanda hadn't texted.

No passive-aggressive messages asking what time he was coming back. No angry inquiries about how much money he was spending. No updates about the cat or the leaky faucet in the utility room. Nothing.

Just absolute, radio silence.

""She’s just playing games,"" Dylan muttered to himself on Monday morning as he stood on the balcony of their $600-a-night boutique hotel room, looking out over the swimming pool. ""She’s giving me the silent treatment to make me feel guilty.""

He dialed her number.

“The number you have dialed is no longer in service or has been disconnected. Please check the number and try again.”

Dylan pulled the phone away from his ear, frowning at the screen. ""What the hell?""

He dialed again. The same automated operator message played.

""Everything okay, sweetie?"" Courtney asked, emerging from the bathroom wearing a silk robe, drying her hair with a plush towel.

""Amanda’s phone is disconnected,"" Dylan said, his brow furrowing. ""That doesn't make any sense. We're on an auto-pay family plan.""

""She probably suspended her line to throw a tantrum,"" Courtney dismissed, walking over and placing her hands on his chest. ""Don't let her ruin our day. The fishing charter leaves the marina in forty-five minutes, and Captain Dave said the mahi-mahi are running offshore. Let's go.""

Dylan tried to shake off the knot forming in his stomach, but by Wednesday afternoon, the cracks in the tropical fantasy were widening into chasms.

Courtney wasn't the breezy, effortless college girl he had remembered.

She threw a public temper tantrum at an upscale seafood restaurant when her lobster was slightly overcooked, humiliating Dylan in front of the waitstaff. She spent hours complaining about her ex-husband’s mother, picking fights with him over trivial comments, and demanding that he pay for every single cab, meal, and souvenir trinket she touched.

When Dylan handed his debit card to the hotel concierge on Thursday morning to settle an incidental bar tab, the receptionist smiled politely and slid the card back across the marble counter.

""I'm sorry, Mr. Mills. This card was declined.""

""Declined?"" Dylan snapped, his face flushing crimson. ""Try it again. There's over twenty thousand dollars in that account.""

The receptionist ran it through the terminal again. ""It’s showing a code 05, sir. Account frozen by court order.""
