Chapter 7 - The Downfall of Gavin Miller

Watching his mistress sprint down the suburban street in absolute hysterics broke whatever fragile sanity Gavin had left. He dropped to his knees on the concrete driveway, burying his face in his trembling hands.

Florence, on the other hand, had completely lost her mind. She lunged toward Valerie, her fingernails clawing at the air. ""You scheming, deceitful witch! You planned this! You knew this whole time and you waited like a snake in the grass!""

""Back off, ma'am!"" Deputy Martinez bellowed, stepping forward, grabbing Florence by the arm, and wrenching her away from Valerie. ""One more step toward Mrs. Miller and you are going straight into the back of my cruiser in zip ties! Do you hear me?!""

Florence began to sob violently, sinking onto the hood of Gavin’s truck. Her carefully curated facade of a high-society matriarch was obliterated. The neighbors across the street were now holding up their phones, recording every single shriek and sob for the community Facebook group.

Valerie looked down at Gavin, who was still kneeling on the pavement, crying like a broken child.

""Get up, Gavin,"" Valerie said softly. ""You look pathetic.""

Gavin slowly raised his head, tears carving paths through the dust and sweat on his cheeks. ""Valerie... how could you do this to me? I’m Isabelle’s father. How could you destroy my life like this?""

""Destroy your life?"" Valerie laughed, a sound so clear and sharp it cut through the morning air like glass. ""Gavin, you destroyed your own life the moment you treated our marriage like an inconvenience and our daughter like a mistake.""

She took a slow, deliberate step toward him, her eyes locking onto his with terrifying intensity.

""Three days ago, I stood in my kitchen and listened to you tell your mistress that you never wanted our daughter. You told her you would give me three weeks before dumping us in a roadside motel. You tried to force me to sign an illegal settlement that gave you everything and left your child with scraps. You brought your mistress into my home to measure my greenhouse for her study.""

Valerie leaned down slightly, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper that only Gavin could hear.

""You thought I was weak because I stayed quiet. You thought that because I loved flowers and soil, I didn't know how to survive a drought. But you forgot one simple truth, Gavin: a gardener knows exactly how to prune dead weight so the rest of the tree can flourish. And right now? You are nothing more than dead, rotting wood.""

Thomas Vance stepped forward, looking down at his gold pocket watch. ""It is 9:45 AM. Mr. Miller, Mrs. Florence Miller, you have fifteen minutes to remove your personal effects from the master bedroom and foyer. After that, a locksmith will be replacing every exterior deadbolt, and private security contractors will be stationed at the property line.""

""Where am I supposed to go?!"" Florence cried out, her voice cracked and hoarse. ""All my furniture is in there! My clothes! My memories!""

""You can take your clothes, Florence,"" Valerie said coldly. ""As for where you go? I hear there’s a lovely extended-stay motel down by the highway. Gavin said it was quite affordable. Perhaps you can split a double room.""

Deputy Martinez escorted the weeping, stumbling pair into the house to gather whatever they could carry in three laundry baskets. Neighbors watched with quiet satisfaction as Gavin carried armfuls of rumpled dress shirts and designer sneakers, tossing them haphazardly into the open bed of his truck. Florence clutched a shoebox of costume jewelry and her purse, muttering curses under her breath like a deranged street preacher.

At precisely 10:02 AM, the heavy commercial flatbed tow truck arrived, its hydraulic winch whining loudly as it backed into the driveway. Within ten minutes, Chloe’s white BMW was hoisted onto the metal bed, its alarm chirping once before being hauled away toward the impound lot.

A locksmith’s van pulled in immediately after, two technicians stepping out with toolboxes and heavy-duty commercial keypads.

Gavin stood by the driver's door of his pickup truck, his entire life reduced to what was tossed into the dirty flatbed. He looked at Valerie one last time—not with anger, not with arrogance, but with the hollow, terrifying realization that he had gambled his entire world against a woman far smarter, stronger, and more resilient than he could ever comprehend.

He climbed into the truck, slammed the door, and drove away, his tires screeching as Florence buried her face in a coat in the passenger seat.
