Chapter 6 - Chloe’s True Colors

The sun began to burn through the morning fog, casting a harsh, unforgiving glare over the driveway. The neighbors had stopped pretending to water their lawns. An elderly couple across the street was sitting openly in folding chairs on their porch, watching the drama unfold like a prime-time television broadcast.

""Deputy Martinez,"" Thomas Vance said, consulting his watch. ""The court order includes an immediate civil protection writ. All unauthorized persons are required to vacate the premises by 10:00 AM. Since neither Mr. Miller nor Mrs. Florence Miller has any legal title to this property, any refusal to leave constitutes criminal trespass.""

""Understood,"" Deputy Martinez replied. He turned to Gavin, his voice dropping into a stern, no-nonsense command. ""Mr. Miller, you, your mother, and this young lady have fifty minutes to gather your immediate personal belongings—clothing, medication, basic toiletries. Everything else must remain in place until a formal property inventory is conducted. If you are still on this property at ten o’clock, I will place you in handcuffs.""

""Fifty minutes?!"" Chloe shrieked, her voice cracking into a shrill panic. ""I hired a professional moving crew coming with a five-thousand-dollar sofa! I paid a non-refundable deposit to the interior decorators!""

She whipped around, grabbing Gavin by the lapels of his sports jacket and shaking him violently. ""You told me you owned this place! You told me your company was pulling in two million a year! You told me your ex-wife was a penniless charity case who couldn't survive without your allowance!""

""Chloe, shut up! Just shut up for a second, let me think!"" Gavin snapped, swatting her hands away. His hair was disheveled, sweat pouring down his temples despite the cool coastal breeze. ""Valerie, listen to me. Let's go inside. Just you and me. We can work out an arrangement. I’ll sign over the truck! I’ll double the child support! Just dismiss this lien!""

""Dismiss the lien?"" Thomas Vance interrupted, stepping between Gavin and Valerie with an icy smile. ""Mr. Miller, the house is only the first chapter of your morning. We haven't even touched upon your corporate affairs yet.""

Gavin froze, his eyes widening in sheer terror. ""What... what does my company have to do with this?""

Thomas snapped open a second folder. ""Under Section 4B of the corporate mezzanine security covenant, failure to cure the default balance grants the trustee the automatic right to seize all collateralized corporate voting stock. As of 8:00 AM, Valerie holds fifty-one percent of the voting shares of Miller Construction LLC.""

Gavin gasped, staggering backward against his truck. ""No. No, that's impossible. That's illegal!""

""It is entirely legal, signed by your own hand and filed with the California Secretary of State,"" Thomas continued ruthlessly. ""Furthermore, my firm conducted a preliminary forensic audit of your corporate accounts over the past seventy-two hours. We discovered that over the last twelve months, you systematically embezzled $140,000 from company operating capital to purchase luxury gifts, weekend resort getaways in Cabo, and a leased 2024 BMW sedan registered under the name of... Miss Chloe Bennett.""

Thomas turned his piercing gaze directly onto Chloe.

Chloe’s jaw dropped. The color drained from her face so completely that her heavy bronzer looked like dirt smeared across her cheeks.

""That BMW in the driveway,"" Thomas said, pointing a manicured finger toward the shiny white sedan Chloe had arrived in, ""was purchased using misappropriated corporate funds pledged to the Miriam Vance Trust. As the majority shareholder, Mrs. Valerie Miller has already filed a civil reclamation notice. The commercial repo flatbed is already en route. Miss Bennett, you won't be driving that car off this curb.""

""What?!"" Chloe screamed, clutching her car keys to her chest like a lifeline. ""Gavin gave that to me! It was a performance bonus! I earned that car!""

""You're a junior intern who has worked there for eight months, Chloe,"" Valerie said, her voice dripping with dry amusement. ""Unless your architectural drafting skills cure cancer, nobody believes that was a performance bonus.""

Chloe turned on Gavin like a cornered viper. ""You pathetic, lying fraud! You told me you were a millionaire! You bought me a stolen car?! You dragged me out here to humiliate me in front of these backwater rednecks?!""

""Chloe, baby, please, I can fix this—"" Gavin pleaded, reaching out for her.

""Don't you dare touch me!"" Chloe screamed, slapping his hands away with enough force to crack her manicured nails. ""Don't you ever come near me again! You’re ruined! You have nothing!""

She threw her clipboard at Gavin’s chest, turned on her designer heels, and began storming down the street on foot, her stilettos clacking frantically against the asphalt as she frantically tried to summon an Uber on her phone.
