Chapter 4 - The Freeze

The air inside the corporate boardroom of Apex Engineering was suffocating. Daniel sat at the end of a long glass conference table, his palms sweating against his trousers. Across from him sat Marcus Vance, the managing director, flanked by two stern-looking forensic auditors and the company’s chief legal counsel, a severe woman named Sarah Jenkins.

""Marcus, this is a complete misunderstanding,"" Daniel stammered, his voice trembling despite his efforts to appear confident. ""My wife and I are going through an acrimonious separation. Claire is an attorney. She's vindictive, she's bitter that I decided to end the marriage, and she's using legal intimidation to disrupt my professional standing. You know my loyalty to this firm!""

Sarah Jenkins slid a manila folder across the glass table. ""Daniel, this has nothing to do with your wife's personal feelings. It has everything to do with these bank statements.""

Daniel looked down. The document in front of him was an itemized ledger detailing seventeen separate payments made by Titan Construction—one of Apex's largest concrete vendors—directly into a private consulting company named Mercer Strategic Partners. The total sum exceeded four hundred and twenty thousand dollars over eighteen months.

""Where did you get this?"" Daniel gasped, his face draining of color.

""It was submitted this afternoon under a formal whistleblower disclosure by your wife’s legal counsel,"" Sarah said evenly. ""Because your consulting LLC listed your primary residential address, and because you attempted to physically remove and destroy computer hardware from that address this morning during a divorce proceeding, your home office was deemed a site of corporate evidence. When your wife’s attorney filed an emergency petition to preserve marital records, this financial conflict of interest became public legal record.""

""I... I was providing independent advisory services,"" Daniel lied frantically, his heart hammering against his ribs. ""It didn't interfere with Apex contracts!""

Marcus Vance stood up, leaning forward with his knuckles pressed against the table. ""You signed a strict non-compete and anti-kickback covenant when we promoted you to director, Daniel. Titan Construction was awarded three major city bridge contracts because your internal project evaluations rated them as the preferred bidder. You took personal bribes to award corporate contracts. That isn't a domestic dispute. That is commercial bribery and wire fraud.""

""Marcus, please—""

""You are terminated immediately for cause,"" Marcus cut him off coldly. ""Our security team is already clearing out your desk. Furthermore, our legal department has a fiduciary duty to turn these findings over to the state attorney general's financial crimes unit. Turn over your corporate laptop, your building access badge, and your company credit card right now.""

Daniel's hands shook violently as he reached into his pocket, pulling out his security badge and setting it on the table. The suddenness of the collapse left him dizzy. Just two hours ago, he was laughing in his mother's living room, celebrating his total victory over Claire. Now, his career, his six-figure salary, and his professional reputation were evaporating before his eyes.

He stumbled out of the corporate tower into the bright afternoon glare, barely able to breathe. He needed to get back to Margaret’s penthouse, gather his thoughts, and call his personal defense lawyer. He pulled his smartphone from his pocket to order an upscale dinner, but when he opened his banking application to verify the balance, a bold red notification flashed across the screen:

ACCOUNT TEMPORARILY SUSPENDED BY COURT ORDER. CONTACT YOUR FINANCIAL INSTITUTION.

Daniel froze on the sidewalk. He frantically switched to his personal checking account. Frozen. He checked his high-yield savings account. Frozen. He attempted to open his business account at First National where he had transferred the three hundred and fifty thousand dollars. The balance read: RESTRICTED FUNDS - ZERO AVAILABLE.

Panic seized his chest like a vice. He had no cash, no credit cards, and no job.

He hurried toward the parking structure where he had left the Mercedes SUV. He unlocked the driver’s door, climbed inside, and jammed the ignition button, desperate to flee the city center. But before he could even shift the car into reverse, the sharp wail of a police siren echoed through the concrete garage.

A black-and-white patrol vehicle pulled up directly behind his bumper, blocking his exit. Two uniformed officers stepped out, their hands resting cautiously near their utility belts.

One of the officers approached Daniel’s window and tapped the glass. ""Driver, turn off the engine and step out of the vehicle with your hands visible.""

""Officer, what is the meaning of this?"" Daniel yelled, his voice cracking with hysteria as he rolled down the window. ""This is my car! I pay the lease!""

""Vehicle license plate matches an active stolen property bulletin filed by Mercer Commercial Holdings,"" the officer stated calmly. ""Step out of the car, sir. Right now.""
