Chapter 2 - The Mother-in-Law’s Victory Party

Ten miles north, in the manicured, gated neighborhood of Oakridge Estates, Margaret Mercer was holding court. She had invited four of her closest neighborhood friends over to Daniel’s newly leased luxury penthouse overlooking the marina. Two hired laborers were busy carrying our former dining chairs and Italian sectional up the freight elevator while Margaret paced the marble foyer, directing traffic like an arrogant general inspecting fresh war plunder.

""Careful with that mahogany frame!"" Margaret barked at a sweating young mover. ""That table cost thousands of dollars. Daniel bought it during his second promotion, and he certainly wasn't going to let that plain, boring woman keep it for herself.""

Her longtime friend Eleanor stood by the kitchen island, sipping champagne from a fluted glass. ""Margaret, dear, wasn't the divorce supposed to go through standard mediation first? Isn't Daniel worried about what a family court judge might say about taking everything before the initial filing?""

Margaret waved a heavily jeweled hand dismissively, scoffing at the thought. ""Please, Eleanor. Claire is a mouse. She sits behind a desk all day shuffling corporate files and pretending to be a big-shot lawyer. She didn't even shed a single tear when Daniel pulled the refrigerator out of the wall. She just stood there sipping her coffee with that blank, pathetic look on her face. Women like that have no spine. She knows Daniel is the star of that household. A man has every right to claim what his hard work provided.""

Daniel walked into the penthouse living room carrying two crystal decanters of single-malt scotch that my father had gifted us on our wedding day. He was dressed in a designer linen shirt, sweating slightly but sporting a broad, victorious grin. For months, his mother had fed his ego, convincing him that he was an underappreciated corporate titan tied down by an ambitious, emotionless wife who refused to stroke his pride.

""Everything from the master bedroom is upstairs, Mom,"" Daniel announced, pouring himself a generous measure of scotch. ""The custom mattress, the armoire, even the safe from the walk-in closet.""

""Did you remember to change the passcodes on the primary investment accounts?"" Margaret asked, lowering her voice conspiratorially as she pulled her son aside. ""We need to make sure she can't access a single dime before she realizes she has to beg you for an allowance.""

""Did it yesterday from my office computer,"" Daniel smirked, clinking his glass against hers. ""Transferred three hundred and fifty thousand dollars into my private business account at First National. She’ll log into the joint banking portal tomorrow morning and find exactly four hundred dollars left for groceries. Let's see how smart her fancy law degree makes her feel when she can't even afford to turn on the electricity.""

Margaret beamed with pride, patting her grown son’s cheek affectionately. ""That’s my brilliant boy. A woman like Claire thought she could look down on our family just because her father owned a few commercial shopping centers downtown. She never showed me proper deference. She didn't cook your dinners from scratch, she refused to attend my charity galas on weekends, and she acted like her career was equal to yours. Today, we put her back in her place.""

Daniel leaned back against the plush cushions of our stolen sectional, feeling an overwhelming sense of triumph. In his mind, he had executed the perfect corporate raid on his own marriage. He had retained the luxury German car, cleaned out the bank accounts, secured all premium furnishings, and left his wife standing in an empty, worthless shell of a house.

Suddenly, his smartphone buzzed violently on the glass coffee table.

Daniel glanced at the caller ID, expecting it to be a congratulatory call from his friend or perhaps an apology text from Claire begging to negotiate. Instead, the screen displayed the name of Marcus Vance, the managing senior partner at his engineering firm.

Daniel cleared his throat, wiped the smug grin from his face, and tapped the speakerphone button. ""Marcus, good afternoon. Are we still on track for the regional expansion meeting tomorrow?""

""Daniel, where the hell are you right now?"" Marcus’s voice boomed through the phone, sharp, cold, and entirely devoid of its usual warmth.

Daniel blinked, glancing awkwardly at his mother. ""I took a personal half-day to finalize my relocation, Marcus. Why? What’s going on?""

""You need to get down to corporate headquarters immediately,"" Marcus said grimly. ""There are two process servers waiting in the lobby with an emergency judicial injunction, and corporate legal just received a formal fraud notice naming you, your private consulting entity, and this firm as co-defendants. Pack your things, Daniel. You're suspended pending an immediate internal audit.""
