Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

The ballroom descended into utter bedlam.

Gasps of disbelief, indignant murmurs, and the rapid-fire shutter clicks of press cameras filled the air. Several prominent city council members immediately stood up and walked away from the head table, putting as much physical distance between themselves and Daniel as humanly possible.

Mayor Thomas looked at the projection screen, looked at Daniel, and slowly stepped away from the podium, his face mottled with purple rage.

""Turn that off!"" Daniel screamed, lunging toward the AV technician at the side of the stage. ""Turn the damn screen off right now!""

""Don't touch that console,"" Evelyn Cross’s voice cut through the room like a whip. ""Those documents are public exhibits attached to an emergency filing submitted to the County Superior Court at 4:30 PM today. Obstructing their display is a violation of an active evidentiary proceeding.""

Daniel spun around, his chest heaving, his face contorted in an ugly, cornered grimace. ""Megan, you vicious, spiteful bitch! You orchestrated this! You're trying to destroy my career because you couldn't handle an emergency like an adult!""

""I handled the emergency, Daniel,"" I said, my voice utterly devoid of fear. ""I carried our broken daughter through smoke, fire, and falling timber while you ran away with your second family. You aren't a hero. You're a coward who hid behind a natural disaster to protect your dirty little secret.""

I reached into the folder and pulled out a blue-backed legal document. I stepped up to the head table and slapped it down right in front of his scotch glass.

""You've been served,"" I announced clearly. ""Petition for dissolution of marriage on grounds of extreme cruelty, gross marital misconduct, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. We have also filed an emergency motion for sole legal and physical custody of Lily, with a permanent restraining order attached.""

Rebecca Cole was practically hyperventilating, grabbing her designer purse and trying to scurry down the stage steps. But two female guests at Table 4—wives of Daniel's primary commercial partners—deliberately blocked her path, glaring at her with unvarnished disgust.

""Excuse me,"" Rebecca stammered, her face pale as flour. ""Let me through. You don't know the whole story.""

""We know enough, honey,"" one of the women sneered, crossing her arms. ""You took money from a child's family and let her get abandoned in a fire. Don't look at us.""

Daniel looked around the room, realizing with horrifying finality that every bridge, every connection, and every ounce of social capital he had spent fifteen years cultivating was turning to ash before his eyes.

""This isn't legal!"" Daniel shouted, pointing a trembling finger at Evelyn. ""You can't freeze my assets without a hearing!""

""Oh, the hearing already happened, Daniel,"" Evelyn replied with a chilling, victorious smile. ""Judge Harrison granted an ex-parte emergency injunction at 5:00 PM based on clear evidence of fraudulent dissipation of marital assets. Every single commercial account linked to Vance Properties is frozen. Your credit lines are locked. Your developer permits on the West River project are under administrative review by the city ethics board.""

She stepped closer, leaning across the table. ""And as for the assault on Lily? Detective Bradley from the Special Victims Unit is waiting for you in the country club lobby. You have approximately ninety seconds to gather your dignity before they put the handcuffs on you.""

Daniel’s knees literally buckled. He reached out to brace himself against the podium, but his hand slipped on the spilled red wine.

He looked down at Lily.

""Lily..."" he whispered, his voice cracking, trying to project a pathetic, pleading fatherly sorrow. ""Lily, baby, tell them. Tell them Daddy loved you. Tell them Daddy didn't mean to hurt you.""

Lily didn't flinch. She stood beside me, her small hand firmly gripping mine.

She looked up at the man who had abandoned her, her eyes clear, steady, and wise far beyond her six years.

""You broke my fingers so you could run away,"" Lily said, her childish voice ringing like a crystal bell through the dead-silent hall. ""My doctor told me bad things have to be fixed. You're the bad thing, Daddy. And Mommy is fixing you.""

The entire room seemed to draw in a sharp, collective breath.

Two uniformed police officers walked through the double doors, flanked by a plainclothes detective with a badge clipped to his belt.

""Daniel Vance?"" Detective Bradley called out, his voice echoing authoritatively. ""Step away from the table and put your hands behind your back.""
