Chapter 4 - The Corporate Guillotine

The call on Julian's phone was from Arthur Sterling.

Julian’s hands were slick with sweat as he swiped the green button, holding the phone to his ear with forced composure.

"Arthur," Julian began, trying to inject his trademark executive authority into his voice. "I just opened the email notification. There seems to be an absurd misunderstanding regarding my travel schedule—"

"Save your breath, Julian," Arthur’s voice cut through the line, cold, dry, and completely devoid of warmth. "The board is currently in session in the Midtown executive conference room. You are on speakerphone with seven senior partners, our forensic auditor, and outside regulatory counsel."

Julian froze, his eyes darting toward Isabel, who was watching him from the bed with sudden alarm.

"Arthur, I am conducting sensitive pre-market research—"

"You chartered a Gulfstream G650 out of Teterboro to Aspen under the guise of an Asia-Pacific trade delegation," Arthur interrupted bluntly. "You billed eighty-four thousand dollars in private aviation fuel, twenty-two thousand dollars in luxury lodging, and sixty-eight thousand dollars at Harry Winston to the strategic expansion budget."

A murmur of harsh, disgusted voices rumbled through the speakerphone from the New York boardroom.

"Furthermore," Arthur continued, "your companion on this excursion is an entry-level marketing employee whose position was created without departmental authorization four months ago. This is an open violation of federal corporate compliance, fiduciary responsibility, and the core ethics charter of this firm."

Julian scrambled out of his chair, walking out onto the freezing terrace to keep his voice away from Isabel.

"Arthur, listen to me! I built this firm's asset base by forty percent over the last three fiscal quarters! You cannot remove a chief executive over a clerical travel dispute on Christmas Eve!"

"A clerical dispute?" Arthur scoffed. "Julian, the evidence was not brought to us by an external auditor. It was delivered by your wife, along with twenty-four months of forensic banking analyses demonstrating systematic embezzlement from your private drawing accounts."

Julian’s heart felt like it had dropped through the floorboards.

"Elena?" he whispered, his voice cracking.

"Mrs. Blackwood is a former senior quantitative risk analyst, Julian," Arthur reminded him with biting sarcasm. "Did you honestly believe a woman who modeled multi-billion-dollar derivatives for six years wouldn't notice an amateur skimming eighty thousand dollars through third-tier shell companies?"

Julian gripped the balcony railing, his vision swimming.

"The board has unanimously voted to suspend your executive powers effective immediately," Arthur announced. "Your corporate credit accounts have been frozen, your access to Blackwood Capital’s intranet has been revoked, and an official referral is being submitted to the Securities and Exchange Commission at nine o'clock tomorrow morning."

"Wait! Arthur, let me explain to the board in person—"

"You have twenty-four hours to vacate the company-leased suite in Aspen, Mr. Blackwood," Arthur said flatly. "After that, resort security will remove your belongings. Good day."

The line went dead with a sharp, electronic click.

Julian stared at his phone, his chest heaving, the icy mountain wind biting into his skin through his silk pajamas.

From inside the warm suite, Isabel walked up to the glass doors, holding her phone with a look of pure panic.

"Julian," she whimpered, tears welling in her eyes. "My corporate card just bounced at the ski rental shop. And my company email account says 'Account Deactivated by Administrator.' What is going on?"

Julian turned around, his face pale, his eyes wide and hollow.

The empire he had spent ten years clawing his way to control had been dismantled in less than twenty minutes.
