Chapter 5 - The Red Ribbon File

Every head at the table turned toward me.

Vanessa’s eyes dropped instantly to my hands. Caroline gasped, her hand flying to her throat, while Evelyn leaned forward so sharply that her pearls clattered against the edge of the mahogany table.

I didn't rush. I reached into the hidden seam of my wool skirt and pulled out the small brass key. It caught the soft light of the chandelier—an old-fashioned, notched key, unpretentious and simple, completely devoid of the ostentatious gold that the Whitmores favored.

I placed it flat on the table and pushed it toward Nathan Cole.

The key slid three feet across the polished wood, coming to rest beside the black briefcase.

""That's just a safety deposit key,"" Grant sneered, though his voice had developed a distinct tremor. ""You can't transfer controlling interest in an eighty-six-million-dollar corporation with a three-dollar brass key, Nathan! You're making a mockery of the probate code!""

""This key,"" Nathan said, picking it up between his thumb and forefinger, ""does not unlock a bank vault, Grant. It unlocks the private security safe Daniel installed inside the vault of the Bluegrass Trust Company in 2018. Inside that safe rests the master ledger of Whitmore Holdings Series-B Super-Voting Stock.""

Nathan stood up, towering over the table.

""Under the bylaws of the Delaware Trust, the physical possession of this key, combined with the original certificate of registration, designates the sole executor of Daniel Whitmore’s residual estate. Daniel did not leave his majority stake to a board. He did not leave it to his mother. He left ninety-one percent of the entire commercial operation to his two children, Ethan Daniel Whitmore and Emma Vance Whitmore.""

Emma squeezed my thumb. Ethan looked up at me with his clear, dark eyes—Daniel’s eyes—completely oblivious to the fact that his name was now attached to forty million dollars of blue-chip stock.

""And their guardian?"" Evelyn gasped, her voice cracked and hoarse. ""Who controls the trust until their majority?""

""Their mother,"" Nathan Cole said simply. ""Claire Vance Whitmore. Sole trustee. Unilateral voting authority. Without board oversight, without family veto, and without executive appeal.""

""No!"" Vanessa screamed, slamming both hands down on the table so violently that a water glass toppled, spilling ice water across the legal briefs. ""That's impossible! Daniel loved me! He promised me the logistics division! He told me I was the future of Whitmore Holdings!""

""Daniel told you what was necessary to keep you from embezzling company funds before our forensic audit was completed, Miss Price,"" Nathan replied without an ounce of warmth.

The room went dead silent.

Vanessa froze. The color drained from her cheeks until she looked whiter than the funeral lilies still wilting in the chancel at St. Mark’s.

""What did you say?"" she whispered.

Nathan opened the cream folder once more, extracting a thin, stapled document marked with red forensic audit stamps.

""For fourteen months, Daniel worked with the forensic accounting firm Crowe & Horwath in Cincinnati,"" Nathan said, turning his gaze directly onto Vanessa. ""He discovered that three point eight million dollars had been diverted from the Woodford County development escrow account into a dummy LLC registered in the Cayman Islands under the name Price Global Consulting.""

Caroline turned her head to stare at Vanessa. Grant pulled his hands back from the table as if it had suddenly caught fire.

""Daniel didn't keep you close because he loved you, Vanessa,"" Nathan said softly, each word landing like a sledgehammer. ""He kept you close because every time you authorized an internal wire transfer, you left a digital signature that our investigators were archiving. He knew that if he fired you prematurely, your family’s connections on the banking commission would bury the evidence. He waited until the audit was complete.""

Nathan closed the file with a decisive snap.

""The audit was completed on Tuesday afternoon, Miss Price. Daniel was scheduled to sign the federal indictment referral yesterday morning. His heart attack intervened. But as his executor, Claire now holds the legal obligation to deliver this dossier to the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky.""

Vanessa stumbled backward. Her knees hit the carved sideboard, rattling the crystal decanters.

""Evelyn..."" Vanessa gasped, looking down at the old woman for protection. ""Evelyn, tell him! You knew about the transfers! You said we needed that capital off the books to prevent Claire from taking it in a divorce!""
