Chapter 5 - The Cracking Facade

The bailiff plugged Marcus’s tablet into the courtroom speaker system. Nathan’s voice filled the room, crisp, arrogant, and unmistakably threatening.

""You need to sign Lila's passport renewal and grant full travel consent naming Brooke as the designated chaperone... If you agree, I'll waive the spousal support offset... If you say no, then I file the emergency custody modification on Monday morning... You look unhinged, Vivian. Sign the travel consent by Sunday evening, or I will take full custody and leave you with nothing.""

Click.

Marcus stopped the playback. The silence that followed was suffocating.

Nathan’s face had drained of all color. His knuckles turned white as he gripped the edge of the defense table. Sanders looked like a man who had just realized he was standing on a landmine; he wouldn't even make eye contact with his own client.

Judge Harrison slowly placed her pen down on the bench. When she spoke, her voice was vibrating with controlled fury.

""Mr. Sanders,"" she said softly. ""Are you telling me that your client filed an ex-parte emergency motion using this court’s sacred docket space to execute an extortion scheme against the mother of his child?""

""Your Honor,"" Sanders began, his voice cracking, ""my client was... he was attempting to negotiate a complex international educational arrangement, and tempers were undeniably high—""

""Do not insult my intelligence, Counsel,"" Judge Harrison interjected sharply. ""I have sat on this bench for twenty-two years. I know an orchestrated intimidation campaign when I see one. Mr. Vance deliberately staged an incident at a children’s recital, lied to an educational institution regarding the legal status of his paramour, violated this court’s direct order regarding third parties, and then weaponized an emergency hearing to force his wife into relinquishing physical custody for an international trip.""

She turned her gaze directly upon Nathan. Nathan stood up, attempting to summon his polished courtroom charisma.

""Judge Harrison, if I may explain the context—""

""I told you to remain seated, Mr. Vance!"" Judge Harrison slammed her gavel down with a crack that echoed off the wood paneling. ""One more outburst from you, and I will have the bailiff place you in holding for direct criminal contempt. You are an officer of this court. You know the rules of ethics, yet you have behaved with utter depravity toward the mother of your child.""

Nathan sat down hard, his jaw working furiously.

Behind him, Brooke was frantically texting on her phone. Marcus caught my eye and gave a nearly imperceptible nod. It was time for the second blow.

""Your Honor,"" Marcus said smoothly, stepping back to the lectern. ""In light of Mr. Vance’s demonstrated willingness to engage in fraud, we must also address the financial claims made in his initial response to our divorce complaint. Mr. Vance has repeatedly claimed poverty, asserting that his partnership draw was reduced to less than ninety thousand dollars annually due to firm performance. Based on this false representation, he has paid a meager eight hundred dollars a month in temporary child support while refusing to contribute to Lila’s basic extracurricular expenses.""

Sanders stood up weakly. ""Your Honor, financial discovery is not on today's calendar. This is outside the scope of an emergency custody hearing.""

""It goes directly to the credibility of the movant and his fitness to oversee the child's financial and logistical well-being,"" Judge Harrison countered. ""Mr. Hayes, what do you have?""

""I submit Exhibit C, Your Honor,"" Marcus said, delivering another thick folder to the bench. ""A certified forensic audit of corporate filings. Three months ago, Mr. Vance established an entity known as B&N Global Advisory LLC. Over the past ninety days, while claiming financial hardship to this court, Mr. Vance diverted three hundred and eighty-five thousand dollars from his legal partnership accounts into this single entity. The sole managing member of this entity is Ms. Brooke Miller, who is currently seated in the second row of this gallery.""

Brooke let out a sharp gasp, dropping her phone onto the hardwood floor. It clattered loudly.

Judge Harrison looked from the corporate documents to Brooke, then back to Nathan. ""Is this true, Mr. Vance? Have you been concealing marital assets in your associate's name while petitioning this court for relief?""

Nathan looked at Sanders, but his attorney had completely surrendered. Sanders stared down at his legal pad, refusing to utter a single word in defense of the indefensible.

""I will issue my temporary rulings immediately,"" Judge Harrison declared, pulling her ledger toward her. The temperature in the room had dropped below freezing. Nathan looked as though he were suffocating in his high-end suit.
