Chapter 4 - The Hall of Mirrors

The mahogany walls of Courtroom 4B were heavy and quiet. Judge Harrison, a sharp-featured woman in her late fifties with silver-rimmed glasses, sat behind the elevated bench reviewing the preliminary filings.
Nathan’s attorney, Greg Sanders, took the lectern first. He was a theatrical litigator who thrived on dramatic language and hand gestures.
""Your Honor,"" Sanders boomed, pacing before the bench. ""We are here today on an urgent matter of child welfare. On Friday evening, at a public school performance, the respondent, Mrs. Vivian Vance, demonstrated an escalating pattern of erratic, hostile behavior. In front of dozens of parents and young children, she staged an aggressive confrontation with my client’s professional associate, Ms. Brooke Miller, who merely wished to offer congratulations to young Lila. Mrs. Vance’s persistent instability is alienating the child from her father. Furthermore, Mrs. Vance is actively sabotaging this child’s once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to train at the prestigious Zurich Ballet Conservatory by refusing to sign standard travel authorizations.""
Sanders turned and pointed dramatically toward me. ""My client is an esteemed partner at a top-tier law firm. He has offered to fully finance this European intensive through independent sponsorships. Mrs. Vance’s refusal is rooted purely in spite. We request immediate temporary sole custody to ensure Lila's emotional safety and international educational advancement.""
Nathan sat at his counsel table, nodding with a solemn, sorrowful expression. He actually wiped an imaginary tear from the corner of his eye.
Judge Harrison looked over her glasses at Marcus. ""Mr. Hayes? Does your client have a response to these allegations of public disturbance and obstruction?""
Marcus stood up slowly, buttoning his jacket. He didn't pace. He didn't raise his voice. He walked to the lectern with the casual grace of a man who held four aces.
""May it please the court,"" Marcus began smoothly. ""We agree entirely with Mr. Sanders on one point: young Lila’s welfare was indeed compromised on Friday evening. However, the architect of that distress was not Mrs. Vance. It was Mr. Vance, aided and abetted by Ms. Miller.""
Marcus opened his folder and handed three sets of documents to the bailiff. ""Your Honor, I am submitting Exhibit A: the certified affidavit and high-definition lobby surveillance footage provided voluntarily by Madame Elena Vance, Artistic Director of the Oakridge Dance Conservatory. Madame Vance has no relation to my client, despite the shared surname.""
Nathan shifted in his chair, his head snapping toward Sanders.
""The audio and video recordings,"" Marcus continued, ""clearly demonstrate that Mrs. Vivian Vance never raised her voice, never used profanity, and never touched Ms. Miller. What the recording does reveal, Your Honor, is Ms. Miller presenting a bouquet with a card explicitly reading 'Love, Dad & Brooke,' in direct violation of this court's order dated March twelfth, Paragraph fourteen, which strictly forbids the introduction of third-party romantic interests without prior mediation.""
Judge Harrison’s eyes hardened as she looked down at the color stills attached to the affidavit. ""Mr. Sanders, is this accurate?""
Sanders stammered, flipping through his papers. ""Your Honor, Ms. Miller was present merely in a supportive capacity as a family friend—""
""A family friend?"" Marcus cut in, his voice cutting through the room like a scalpel. ""Then perhaps Mr. Sanders can explain Exhibit B. An email sent three weeks prior by Mr. Nathan Vance to the dance academy administration, officially requesting that Ms. Miller be listed as Lila’s 'authorized step-parent' and granting her backstage access while simultaneously attempting to cancel Mrs. Vance's seat reservation in Row Four.""
Judge Harrison looked up from the papers, her gaze locking onto Nathan like a laser sight. ""Did you do this, Mr. Vance?""
Nathan cleared his throat, standing up. ""Your Honor, there was a clerical misunderstanding between my office staff and the academy—""
""Sit down, Mr. Vance,"" Judge Harrison snapped, her voice dropping into a dangerous, icy tone. ""You are represented by counsel. Do not speak unless addressed.""
Brooke shrank down in her seat behind the bar, suddenly looking very small in her burgundy suit.
""There is another matter, Your Honor,"" Marcus said, pressing the advantage without mercy. ""Mr. Sanders spoke at length about the Zurich Ballet Intensive. He painted Mrs. Vance as an obstructionist refusing to allow her daughter to travel. What he failed to mention is that Mr. Vance attempted to blackmail my client into signing over complete international guardianship of Lila to Ms. Brooke Miller for six weeks. We have the transcript and audio recording of Mr. Vance’s phone call from Sunday night, wherein he stated that if Mrs. Vance did not surrender travel consent, he would use this very court to take Lila away from her.""

Judge Harrison took off her glasses. The courtroom was so quiet you could hear the tick of the wall clock above the exit.
""Let me hear the recording,"" Judge Harrison ordered.
