Chapter 7 - A Boy's Secret Mission

Two weeks after the gallery exhibition, Claire arrived at her new independent art studio in South Boston. The space was bright and airy, filled with morning light pouring through floor-to-ceiling warehouse windows.

As she unlocked the heavy industrial door, she noticed a small figure sitting on the top concrete step, his sneakers dangling over the edge.

It was Owen.

A few yards away, parked near the curb, was a familiar black sedan. Adrian’s longtime family driver, Marcus, stood beside the door, looking nervous and deeply apologetic. Marcus touched his cap respectfully. “I’m sorry, Mrs. Mercer. He wouldn't let me drive anywhere else after school. He said he would jump out of the car if I didn't bring him here.”

Claire’s heart melted instantly. She set her leather satchel down and knelt beside the seven-year-old boy.

“Hey, buddy,” she said softly.

Owen threw his arms around her neck so hard that her breath caught. He buried his face in her collarbone, his small shoulders shaking with silent sobs. Claire wrapped her good arm tightly around him, resting her chin on his soft brown hair.

“I missed you so much,” Owen whispered into her jacket. “Daddy said you were making pretty paintings, but I thought you didn't love me anymore.”

Claire pulled back, framing his face with her hands. “Owen, listen to me very carefully. What happened between your father and me has nothing to do with you. I will love you until the end of time. Do you understand? Nothing will ever change that.”

Owen sniffed, wiping his nose with his sleeve. He reached into his backpack and pulled out a rolled-up piece of construction paper tied with a blue yarn string.

“I drew this for your new studio,” he said shyly.

Claire unrolled the paper. It was a crayon drawing of a huge green lizard wearing red boots, standing beside a bright orange fox. Above them, in messy, uneven block letters, Owen had written: THE GUARDS OF THE HOUSE.

Tears stung Claire’s eyes. She pressed a kiss to his forehead. “It’s the best painting in the entire city. I’m going to frame it and hang it right above my desk.”

A shadow fell over the doorway. Adrian stood there, panting slightly as if he had run up the stairs, his tie loosened. Marcus had called him the moment Owen had commandeered the vehicle.

Owen didn't flinch. He stood up and took Claire’s hand protectively. “Daddy, don't be mean to Claire.”

Adrian looked at his son, then at Claire. The sight of Owen holding her hand broke whatever remaining pride Adrian possessed. He fell to one knee on the studio floor, bringing himself to eye level with the child.

“I’m not here to be mean, Owen,” Adrian said, his voice cracking completely. “I’m here to tell the truth.”
