Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Raid

The morning after the gala, the glass lobby of Bennett Development Group on Wacker Drive was swarming with federal investigators.

Agents from the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation division and the Department of Justice stepped through the revolving doors at precisely 8:30 AM.

They carried red evidence tape, hard-sided aluminum storage crates, and federal search warrants signed by Chief District Judge Eleanor Vance.

I stood in the marble mezzanine overlooking the entrance, wearing a tailored charcoal wool coat, my hands resting in my pockets.

Beside me stood Denise Carter, the social worker who had helped me start the foundation on that rickety folding table thirteen years ago.

Denise wore a bright yellow blazer and an expression of pure, unadulterated satisfaction.

"They're upstairs in Strategy right now, Laura," Denise whispered, adjusting her horn-rimmed glasses.

"Word is Vanessa tried to shred three hard drives before the marshals badged past security."

"She won't get far with shredded plastic," I said quietly.

"Noah mirrored the cloud backups to three independent forensic servers on Friday night."

Down below, an elevator chime sounded.

The brass doors slid open, and Grant stepped out, flanked by his two personal corporate defense attorneys.

He looked like a man who hadn't slept in forty-eight hours: his tie was undone, his designer suit rumpled, and dark purple hollows bruised the skin under his bloodshot eyes.

When he spotted me standing on the mezzanine, he stopped dead in his tracks.

He broke away from his legal team, taking the curved stone stairs two at a time until he reached the balcony where I stood.

"Laura, call them off," Grant begged, his voice raspy and desperate, reaching out to grab my sleeve.

I stepped back, keeping two full feet of empty air between us.

"I don't have the authority to call off the Department of Justice, Grant," I said coldly.

"You set this up!" he hissed, his face contorting into sudden, ugly venom.

"You put our thirteen-year-old child up on that stage to destroy my reputation because you were jealous of Vanessa!"

A cold, sharp laugh escaped my throat.

"Jealous of what, Grant? Jealous of a woman who helped you rob an educational charity for underprivileged kids?"

"It wasn't robbery! It was an internal capital loan!" Grant argued, his hands waving wildly in the air.

"I was going to replace the funds as soon as the Riverfront Plaza financing closed next quarter! Nobody was going to lose a single dollar!"

"Eli lost his tuition on Tuesday morning, Grant," I reminded him, each word landing like an iron hammer.

"His mother had to tell him he couldn't take his midterm exams because your four-million-dollar 'capital loan' was sitting in an escrow account for a three-story penthouse with a private infinity pool."

Grant swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing nervously.

"Laura... please. Think of Noah. If I go to prison, what happens to his future? What happens to our family name?"

"Our family name was Bennett, Grant," I replied, looking directly into his hollow eyes.

"And Noah decided on stage that he didn't want any part of what you turned it into."

Two federal marshals stepped onto the mezzanine, their badges glinting in the morning light.

"Grant Bennett?" the lead agent announced, holding up an official arrest warrant.

"You are required to accompany us to the Dirksen Federal Building for immediate processing on counts of wire fraud, charity embezzlement, and identity theft."

Grant looked at me one last time, waiting for the gentle, forgiving wife who had bailed him out fifteen years ago with her mother’s condo.

I didn't blink.

I simply turned my back on him and walked toward the conference room, leaving him to the cold click of steel handcuffs behind me.
