Chapter 3 - The Price of Arrogance

Two uniformed police officers and an investigator from the state attorney's office stepped into the dining room through the arched hallway. The lead investigator, a sharp-featured woman named Detective Miller, displayed her gold badge with practiced ease.

"Grant Sterling?" Detective Miller asked, her eyes sweeping over the spilled bourbon and the incriminating papers scattered across the walnut table.

"Look, Officer, there has been a ridiculous misunderstanding," Grant pleaded, sweating profusely through his bespoke collar. "My wife is experiencing severe prenatal anxiety and made false allegations to retaliate against my infidelity."

Detective Miller didn't even look at him; she stepped past Grant and addressed Nathan Cole and Michael Avery. "Mr. Cole, Mr. Avery, did your board just ratify the emergency subpoena for corporate server records?"

"Unanimously," Michael said, handing the investigator a signed document from his suit pocket. "As primary trustee, I've officially suspended Grant Sterling from all executive authority, effective five minutes ago."

Grant stumbled backward, clutching the edge of the dining sideboard to keep from collapsing. His multi-million-dollar empire, his board seat, and his high-society standing had vanished before the dessert plates were even served.

"Madison Vale," Detective Miller turned her attention to the trembling woman in the corner. "You are named as an accessory in the unauthorized diversion of restricted securities and money laundering."

Madison burst into frantic tears, dropping her purse to the floor and pointing an accusing finger at my husband. "He told me it was his money! He promised me the escrow was his personal bonus pool! He told me his wife was a brainless idiot who would never check the accounts!"

Grant looked at Madison with raw hatred, the superficial passion between them dissolving into vicious survival instincts within seconds. "You greedy little leech! You begged for those earrings! You demanded the villa in St. Barts!"

"Both of you, quiet down," the uniformed officer ordered, stepping between them with a pair of steel handcuffs. "Mr. Sterling, you are being taken into custody for commercial fraud, identity theft, and grand larceny."

The cold click of the handcuffs echoed sharply around the room, snapping over Grant’s wrists like iron jaws. He looked at me, his eyes pleading, desperate, and entirely stripped of the cruel amusement he had worn thirty minutes earlier.

"Emma, please," he whimpered as they guided him toward the foyer. "Think of our son! What kind of mother puts her child's father in prison?"

"A mother who refuses to let her son grow up believing that cruelty is strength," I answered, watching him disappear into the night.
