Chapter 5 - The Desperate Strike

By Saturday evening, the financial press had caught the scent of blood. The Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, and The Chicago Tribune ran front-page articles detailing the dramatic coup at Whitmore Sterling Group. The headlines were brutal:

Ousted CEO Escorted From Chicago Fintech Giant Amid Multi-Million Dollar Fraud Inquiry.

Heiress Claire Whitmore Reclaims Family Throne in Stunning Boardroom Revolt.

I spent the weekend secluded in the penthouse, surrounded by my dearest friend and private physician, Dr. Aris, along with my legal team. The locks had all been re-keyed with military-grade biometric deadbolts, and Frank had stationed two round-the-clock guards at the private elevator bank in the lobby.

For the first time in five years, the air in my home felt clean. The lingering scent of Adrian’s sandalwood cologne had been thoroughly scrubbed away by a professional cleaning crew, replaced by the fresh, sweet scent of white lilies and eucalyptus. In the nursery down the hall, the crib was made, the soft pink blankets were folded, and the hand-painted mural of willow trees my father had commissioned before he died glowed warmly under the recessed lighting.

At eight o'clock on Sunday evening, my phone chimed with an incoming call from an unknown number. Thinking it was one of the forensic accountants, I answered.

""Claire.""

Adrian’s voice sounded hollow, hoarse, and raw, as if he had been screaming for forty-eight hours straight.

""How did you get this number?"" I asked cold.

""It doesn't matter,"" he rasped. ""I’m sitting in a cheap motel room off Interstate 90. My personal cards are declined. The media is camped outside Madison’s brownstone. Her family won't speak to me. The board froze my options, Claire! Fifty million dollars in vested equity... gone! You signed an order alleging criminal malfeasance, which suspends all my golden parachute clauses!""

""That is standard procedure when an executive steals from the treasury, Adrian.""

""I made you!"" he roared suddenly, his voice cracking into high-pitched hysteria. ""You were a weeping little orphan hiding behind your father's art collection when I married you! I built that brand! I went to New York, I went to London, I shook hands with the sovereign funds! You think those Wall Street sharks will respect a pregnant woman who has never run a trading desk? The stock is going to crater tomorrow morning! By noon, Whitmore Sterling will lose thirty percent of its market capitalization!""

""The stock might dip tomorrow,"" I said evenly. ""And then we will announce a twenty-million-dollar share buyback, publish our audited forensic report showing the loss was ring-fenced to your personal spending, and appoint Evelyn Shaw as interim CEO while I assume the Executive Chairmanship. The market loves honesty, Adrian. What it hates is a liar in a five-thousand-dollar suit.""

""Listen to me,"" he pleaded, his tone shifting instantly from rage to desperate groveling. ""Claire, sweetheart. Please. Think about what we had. Remember our trip to Amalfi? Remember the night we decided to try for a baby? I was weak. Men make mistakes when the pressure gets unbearable. Madison meant nothing to me! She was just... she was convenient! I don't love her! I’ll sign over full custody of Eli to her and never see him again! Just drop the criminal charges. Release my personal bank accounts. Give me back my share of the partnership. We can move to Switzerland. We can raise our daughter away from all this toxic noise!""

The disgust that rose in my throat was so intense I had to swallow twice before speaking.

""You are truly pathetic,"" I said. ""Two days ago you were holding that boy against your chest like a proud father, letting his mother wear my robe in front of me. Now you're offering to abandon your own flesh and blood just to save your bank balance?""

""He isn't my family! You and our daughter are my family!""

""You don't have a family, Adrian,"" I whispered. ""You have liabilities. And as of today, I have liquidated mine.""

I ended the call and immediately blocked the number.

I stood up from the sofa, planning to walk to the kitchen for a glass of warm milk, when a sudden, terrifying pressure seized my abdomen.

It wasn't the gentle Braxton-Hicks tightening I had felt over the past month. It was a vicious, tearing cramp that radiated through my lower back and down into my thighs. I gasped, dropping to my knees on the Persian rug, clutching my stomach with both hands.

A warm, wet sensation rushed past my ankles.

My water had broken.

Three weeks early.

May you like

I reached out, my fingers trembling violently, and managed to drag the house telephone off the low coffee table. I hit the speed dial for Frank at the front desk.

""Frank,"" I gasped, sweat instantly breaking out across my forehead as another wave of crushing pain rippled through my torso. ""Frank... call Dr. Aris. Call an ambulance. The baby is coming right now.""
