Chapter 4 - The Secret Call

I lay in the dark bedroom that evening, listening to the floorboards creak as Ryan washed dishes downstairs.

Iris was cradled against my chest, her tiny heartbeat fluttering against my collarbone like the wings of a small sparrow.

Every instinct in my body told me to run, but with seventy fresh surgical staples across my lower abdomen and no car keys, I was a prisoner in my own second-floor bedroom.

I couldn't call my mother.

Ryan had already convinced Mom that I was hysterical, emotional, and prone to panic attacks.

If I called her crying, she would only call Ryan to ask what was wrong, walking right into his trap.

There was only one person left who understood how cold, calculating, and ruthless Ryan could be when he wanted to control an outcome.

My father, David.

Dad was a retired Pennsylvania State Trooper who had spent thirty years working criminal investigations along the Susquehanna corridor.

He had never fully warmed up to Ryan's polished, practiced perfection, often warning me that people who never showed a single flaw usually kept their rot buried under the floorboards.

I reached down beside the mattress where I had slipped my old emergency phone—a spare handset I had kept in my gym bag and hidden under the bottom dust ruffle.

I dialed my father's direct cell number with shaking fingers.

The phone rang three times before Dad answered, his deep, gravelly voice cutting through the silence of the room.

"Meggie? What's going on? It's almost ten o'clock."

"Dad," I whispered, pressing my mouth directly against the microphone so the nursery monitor wouldn't pick up my words. "Don't interrupt me. Just listen."

"Megan, you're whispering. Are you in pain?"

"Dad, Ryan locked my post-op pain medication in his toolbox six days ago," I said, a tear dropping onto Iris’s flannel blanket.

"He's giving me over-the-counter pills and writing fake notes claiming I'm an addict. He has a draft email ready to send to CPS to take Iris away from me."

The line went completely dead for five agonizing seconds.

When Dad spoke again, the warm fatherly tone was entirely gone, replaced by the lethal, focused calm of an investigator working an active hostage scene.

"Is he in the room with you right now?" Dad asked.

"No, he's downstairs."

"Can you walk?"

"Barely. The incision is inflamed, Dad. It hurts to breathe."

"Listen to me very carefully, Meggie," Dad instructed, his voice low and steady. "Do not confront him. Do not mention the email or the toolbox again. Agree to whatever he says tonight."

"Dad, what are you going to do?"

"Tomorrow morning is Wednesday," Dad said. "The hospital scheduled a home health nurse to check your incision and remove your outer dressing, correct?"

"Yes. Nurse Hannah is coming at 10:00 AM."

"I will be sitting on your front porch at 9:45," Dad promised. "Let the medical professional do her job. When she asks for that bottle, you let Ryan handle it. We are going to let him dig his own grave in front of a mandatory reporter."

I closed my eyes, letting out a ragged breath.

"Dad... please hurry."

"I'm on my way at dawn, baby. Hang on."
