Chapter 2 - The Golden Boy's Celebration

By Wednesday morning, word had spread across the south Charlotte social circle like wildfire. Judith had seen to that. Within forty-eight hours of our kitchen confrontation, Cameron’s mother had managed to casually drop the news at her Myers Park garden club, her bridge group, and during Sunday service at their Presbyterian church.

The narrative was crafted with surgical precision: Cameron was a passionate, driven visionary whose marriage had unfortunately ""grown cold and distant,"" while I had become ""unsupportive of his grueling schedule."" Madison was being painted as the radiant young muse who had rekindled his youthful ambition.

I discovered just how public their celebration had become when my phone buzzed with an urgent text from Sarah, my closest friend and a commercial real estate broker in uptown Charlotte.

Lauren. Are you seeing this? Tell me you already know.

Attached was a screenshot of an Instagram story posted by Madison Price. The photo showed the rooftop terrace of Fahrenheit, an upscale downtown restaurant known for its panoramic skyline views and expensive cocktails. In the frame was a chilled bottle of Dom Pérignon, two crystal flutes, and Cameron’s distinct gold Montblanc pen resting beside a sleek black leather folder.

The caption read: To ending toxic chapters and opening the biggest doors of our lives. New beginnings, new partnerships, and forever with my favorite CEO. #BossMoves #Soulmates #Upgrade.

In the background of the shot, barely out of focus, Judith sat beaming, holding up her glass in a toast.

A second later, Sarah called. I answered immediately.

""Lauren, what the hell is happening?"" Sarah demanded, her voice vibrating with outrage. ""He’s flaunting her in broad daylight! They’re having a celebratory dinner at Fahrenheit with his mother while you’re sitting in the house you paid the down payment for?""

""Let them celebrate, Sarah,"" I said evenly, leaning back in my office chair.

""Let them celebrate?! Are you out of your mind? She’s twenty-two! She was probably doing keg stands during spring break three years ago, and now she’s drinking two-hundred-dollar champagne on your husband's dime! People are talking, Lauren. Judith told Brenda at the club that you were being 'difficult about the financial transition' but that Cameron was handling you with grace.""

""Judith is doing exactly what I need her to do,"" I said, looking out at the manicured front lawn. ""She's building Cameron’s confidence. When Cameron feels confident, he gets arrogant. And when he gets arrogant, he stops paying attention to the fine print.""

Sarah paused on the line, her tone shifting from fury to intense curiosity. ""Okay. That tone of voice means you have a plan. What are you doing?""

""I met with Marcus Vance this morning.""

A sharp intake of breath echoed through the phone. Marcus Vance was legendary in North Carolina family law. He didn't handle messy, screaming courtroom dramas; he handled high-net-worth executions. He was expensive, ruthlessly thorough, and had a reputation for dismantling deceptive financial shelters with terrifying precision.

""Marcus Vance?"" Sarah whistled softly. ""Holy hell. Cameron hired Daniel Chase, right? Daniel is a lightweight compared to Vance. Daniel does basic real estate contracts and simple wills for country club buddies.""

""Exactly,"" I said. ""Daniel drew up a separation agreement that Cameron thinks is a masterclass in cornering me. It gives me thirty-five percent of the house, strips me of any claim to Whitlock Private Strategies, and includes an aggressive non-disparagement clause with a fifty-thousand-dollar penalty per breach.""

""And what did Vance say?""

""Vance laughed,"" I answered plainly. ""He told me that if Cameron had spent ten minutes reading the original operating agreement from 2022, he would know that Daniel Chase’s draft contradicts four distinct state corporate statutes regarding marital asset commingling and secured debt collateral.""

""So you're fighting it?""

""No,"" I replied, a calm, lethal certainty settling over me. ""I'm not fighting it. If I fight it in court, Cameron will withdraw the agreement, bring in a high-powered corporate litigation team, delay the venture capital buyout, and tie us up in discovery for three years. I don’t want three years of my life tied to that man.""

""Then what are you doing?""

""Marcus and I are revising the agreement. We aren't changing the percentages Cameron offered me for the house. We aren't asking for alimony. We aren't even demanding a seat on the board.""

""Lauren, are you insane? You're letting him rob you!""

""I'm not letting him rob me, Sarah. We are accepting his terms almost word for word, with only three subtle modifications tucked into the indemnity and debt-assumption riders. Daniel Chase won't catch them because Daniel doesn't understand corporate secured transactions. And Cameron won't catch them because he's currently busy buying two-hundred-dollar champagne for an assistant who thinks he’s a billionaire.""

Sarah was silent for three seconds. Then she let out a low chuckle. ""God, I love you. When do you drop the hammer?""

""Day ten,"" I whispered. ""At precisely ten in the morning.""
