Chapter 1 - The Paper Trail of Lies

The cold Queens morning breeze whipped against my face as I stepped out of Terminal 4 into the taxi line.

My tears had dried completely, leaving behind a cold, crystalline calm. The trembling in my chest had ceased the moment Nathan’s navy suit vanished past the security line.

I sat in the back of the yellow cab and pulled out my tablet, slipping on my reading glasses.

Three days ago, I had been searching for an old homeowner's policy in Nathan’s home office filing cabinet. Instead, I found a hidden compartment behind a false drawer panel.

Inside was a thumb drive, encrypted with a simple password—our wedding anniversary, the bitter irony of which made me laugh out loud in the empty cab.

On that drive were scanned bank statements, prenatal ultrasound photos, and flight itineraries.

Nathan wasn't booked on Air Canada Flight 712 to Toronto.

He was boarding Delta Flight 1449 to Miami International, departing at eleven-thirty sharp.

The ultrasound pictures showed a fourteen-week fetus labeled Baby Boy Prescott. The mother’s name was Brooke Ellery, a twenty-six-year-old marketing coordinator Nathan had hired at his commercial development firm nine months earlier.

"Where to, ma'am?" the cab driver asked, glancing into his rearview mirror.

"Upper East Side, please," I answered, my voice steady, sharp, and clear. "Park Avenue and 72nd Street."

I tapped my screen and opened my private bank application.

Six months ago, my beloved grandmother had passed away, leaving me an unencumbered cash inheritance of seven hundred and twenty thousand dollars.

Nathan had spent weeks consoling me, bringing me hot chamomile tea, holding me while I wept, and gently suggesting that we place the funds into a joint high-yield treasury account to build our family’s dream home.

I had trusted him blindly, transferring the funds into an account where he had secondary signing authority.

Two weeks ago, Nathan had quietly drained every cent, wiring the entire balance to an offshore escrow corporation titled Breeze Harbor Holdings LLC.

The legal registered agent of Breeze Harbor Holdings was Brooke Ellery.

"You thought you were a mastermind, Nathan," I whispered to the passing gray skyline of the Queensboro Bridge. "You thought you left a broken housewife weeping into her pillow."

I dialed a direct private number I had memorized seventy-two hours earlier.

The phone rang twice before a crisp, gravelly voice answered.

"Vance & Sterling Legal Associates. Arthur Vance speaking."

"Arthur, this is Caroline Prescott," I said. "He just boarded the flight to Miami."

Arthur let out a low, satisfied breath over the receiver. "The judicial wiretap warrants and forensic asset liens are prepared, Caroline. Are you ready to pull the trigger?"

"Freeze every account," I commanded without a second of hesitation. "And have the Miami process servers waiting at the baggage claim."
