Chapter 5 - The Eviction In Seaport

At three o'clock that afternoon, a cold wind whipped across Boston Harbor, churning the gray water into choppy whitecaps.

Inside the ultra-modern glass tower at Pier 4 in Seaport, Mia Torres stood in the center of her fourteenth-floor living room, surrounded by designer furniture, shopping bags, and unpacked baby supplies.

She wore an oversized cashmere sweater and designer leggings, holding an ultrasonic picture of her ten-week-old fetus against her chest.

Her phone had been ringing continuously for three hours, but every time she answered, Julian was either shouting incoherently or sobbing so hard he couldn't speak.

The private elevator chime sounded with a sharp, digital ring.

The brass doors slid open directly into the foyer.

Mia smiled, expecting Julian to step out with an update on the merger.

Instead, three people stepped into the apartment: Eleanor Vance, two uniformed Boston police officers, and a representative from the building’s master management company carrying an electronic key programmer.

Mia’s smile died instantly, her hand dropping the ultrasound printout onto the marble console.

"Who are you?" Mia demanded, stepping backward toward the kitchen island.

"This is a private residence! You can't be in here!"

"Miss Torres," Eleanor Vance said, stepping forward with a crisp, polite legal authority.

"I am the legal representative for the Hawthorne Logistics Capital Trust. I am here to execute an emergency Writ of Possession and Asset Seizure issued by the Suffolk County Superior Court at 11:30 this morning."

Mia went completely pale, her mouth opening in soundless shock.

"What are you talking about? Julian bought this apartment for me! He paid for it in cash!"

"Julian Sterling used embezzled corporate funds drawn from an escrow account owned entirely by his wife, Lily Hawthorne," Eleanor explained calmly, handing a stamped legal order across the marble counter.

"The purchase has been declared void due to fraudulent conveyance. The deed has been transferred to the corporate conservatorship, and the premises are being vacated immediately."

The building manager stepped forward with a handheld tablet.

"Your biometric access has been revoked, Miss Torres. The freight elevator is reserved for you for exactly one hour to remove your personal clothing and toiletries."

"One hour?" Mia shrieked, tears of sheer panic breaking through her mascara.

"I am ten weeks pregnant! You can't throw a pregnant woman out into the cold!"

"You are welcome to contact Julian Sterling to arrange temporary accommodations," Eleanor replied, her voice smooth and unyielding.

"However, I should inform you that Mr. Sterling’s personal bank accounts have been frozen pending a criminal forensic audit, and his company vehicle was repossessed from the corporate garage thirty minutes ago."

Mia sank onto the leather barstool, burying her face in her hands as hysterical sobs wracked her frame.

The glamorous illusion of high-society luxury, country club lunches, and wealthy board meetings had disintegrated in the span of a single weekend.

She had traded her career, her dignity, and her reputation for a man who didn't even own the shoes on his feet.

As the police officers stood guard by the door, the building manager tapped his tablet, and the digital locks throughout the penthouse clicked shut with a sharp, final mechanical thud.
