Chapter 9 - The Legal Reckoning

Over the next four months, Todd and Marjorie learned the devastating cost of their arrogance. Once the Linn County prosecutor reviewed the dashcam evidence, Todd was formally charged with reckless endangerment. To avoid jail time and an ugly criminal trial that would have immediately cost him his supervisory job at the agricultural equipment company, his defense attorney negotiated a plea agreement: two years of supervised probation, 200 hours of community service, mandatory anger management counseling, and a permanent criminal record.

When his employer discovered the conviction and the viral nature of the incident—which had leaked through local legal blogs—Todd was demoted to an entry-level inventory clerk, slashing his $5,700 monthly salary down to barely $3,200. Marjorie’s social standing in her tight-knit church community crumbled overnight. When the truth emerged about why her daughter-in-law had left, the ladies of her auxiliary group stopped calling, her neighbors looked the other way when she walked down the driveway, and the family emergency fund she had schemed to establish vanished into astronomical legal retainers to keep her out of accessory charges.

In the divorce proceedings, Sarah Kensington wielded the dashcam video like a sledgehammer. Faced with indisputable evidence of domestic coercion, financial abuse, and intentional abandonment, Todd’s lawyer surrendered every major battle. The family home was placed on the market and sold well above asking price; I received sixty-five percent of the net equity as compensation for financial misconduct. My personal retirement accounts, personal savings, and every penny of my salary were declared non-marital assets, entirely protected from Todd’s grasping hands. When the judge signed the final decree, dissolving our twenty-three-year marriage, I didn't feel sadness. I looked across the courtroom at Todd—haggard, graying, slouching in a cheap off-the-rack suit—and realized that the illusion had completely shattered. He wasn't a strong provider or a loving partner; he was merely a bitter, cowardly boy who had let his mother’s greed dictate his soul.
