Chapter 9 - The Trial of the Wards

The legal reckoning that followed was swift, brutal, and entirely public.

With Caleb’s brazen violation of the protective order and his violent breaking-and-entering caught on our studio’s crystal-clear security cameras, the judge revoked his bail entirely. He remained in the county detention facility awaiting trial, his appeals dismissed one after another.

Stripped of his freedom, Caleb finally broke. Faced with twenty years in state prison for armed burglary, felony assault, and commercial bank fraud, his defense team negotiated a comprehensive plea deal. But the state prosecutor had one non-negotiable condition: Caleb had to testify fully and truthfully against his mother.

Denise Ward’s empire crumbled under oath.

The trial captivated the state for three weeks. Every day, news vans lined the courthouse steps. Belle and I attended every single hearing, sitting side by side in the second row of the gallery. Belle wore a tailored navy dress from our new collection, her baby bump now clearly visible, her head held high.

On the stand, Caleb laid bare the entire sordid history of the Ward family’s financial manipulations. He testified that Denise had masterminded the shell corporations used to siphon funds from Bennett and Thread. He produced encrypted voice recordings of his mother explicitly instructing him to forge my signature on the Apex Capital loan documents, assuring him that "the seamstress will be too emotionally broken to check the books once the wedding is done."

Denise sat at the defense table, her once-immaculate veneer completely stripped away. Dressed in a drab gray suit, her hair no longer professionally styled, she glared at her only son with venomous hatred as he traded her freedom for a reduced sentence. The jury deliberated for less than four hours.

The verdict was unanimous: Denise Ward was found guilty on six counts of grand larceny, four counts of corporate bank fraud, and one count of criminal conspiracy to commit extortion. The judge, a no-nonsense jurist with a reputation for punishing white-collar predators, showed no mercy.

"You used your wealth, your social standing, and your own family as weapons to destroy innocent, hardworking people," the judge said, glaring down from the bench. "You have shown no remorse, no decency, and no basic humanity."

The gavel came down with a resounding crack: Denise Ward was sentenced to twelve years in a federal correctional facility, with a mandatory restitution order requiring her to pay Bennett and Thread seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars in compensatory and punitive damages, alongside a court-mandated trust fund established for Belle’s unborn child.

Caleb received a five-year sentence with eligibility for parole after three, his professional architectural license permanently revoked by the state board.

As the bailiffs led Denise away through the side door, she caught my eye. Her lips moved silently, forming a final, desperate curse. I didn't look away, and I didn't smile. I simply stood beside Belle, watching the shadow of the Ward family fade into the prison transport corridor forever.
