Chapter 5 - Socialite Scorched Earth

By noon on Monday, the video of Caleb slashing my wedding dress had exploded across the internet.

One of our wedding guests—a lifestyle influencer with over half a million followers—had posted the raw, unedited footage to her platforms with the caption: “GROOM ATTACKS BRIDE AT THE ALTAR AFTER PREGNANT EX SHOWS UP.” Within eighteen hours, the video had garnered over twelve million views, spawning thousands of reaction clips, stitches, and investigative breakdowns. Internet sleuths quickly identified Caleb, his architectural firm, and Denise’s prominent role on the boards of three major metropolitan charities.

The public backlash was instantaneous and devastating. Reviews for Caleb’s firm plummeted to a solid one-star rating within hours, with hundreds of comments demanding his commercial clients pull their contracts. But Denise wasn't going down without a fight. True to her vicious nature, she launched a coordinated smear campaign through a local society blog she secretly funded. The headline was vile: “DISGRUNTLED BRIDAL DESIGNER STAGES BIZARRE PUBLICITY STUNT TO EXTORT PROMINENT WARD FAMILY.”

The article claimed that I was deeply in debt, that I had intentionally invited Belle to create drama for social media clout, and that Caleb had merely used the knife to cut away fabric after I had physically assaulted him behind the floral arch. The piece included leaked, selectively edited text messages designed to paint me as an unhinged, gold-digging tyrant who controlled Caleb’s every breath.

Clients began calling the studio in a panic. Two prominent brides canceled their preservation consultations, terrified of being dragged into the media firestorm. By three in the afternoon, a small group of freelance paparazzi had set up cameras across the street from Bennett and Thread, snapping photos every time Nia or I stepped near the windows.

"We need to issue a statement," Nia urged, pacing the length of the hardwood floor while chewing her thumbnail. "Mara, if we let this narrative sit out there, it's going to choke out our commercial business before the legal case even reaches a judge."

"No," I replied, standing in front of my primary dress form where the shredded remnants of my wedding gown were now pinned. "A written statement sounds defensive. Denise wants a mud-slinging contest in the local gossip columns because that's where she feels comfortable. We are going to change the venue entirely."

I picked up my phone and called Belle. She answered on the second ring.

"Belle," I said without preamble. "Denise just published a hit piece claiming you and I coordinated this entire thing to extort her son. She's painting you as a paid actress and me as a con artist."

"I saw it," Belle replied, her voice trembling with barely suppressed fury. "Her lawyer called my parents this morning. He threatened to sue them for defamation if I didn't sign a statement recanting everything I said at the foundry."

"Are you ready to finish this?" I asked.

"Tell me what to do."

Two hours later, Belle arrived at my studio through the alley entrance, avoiding the cameras out front. Nia set up our high-end studio lighting, positioning two stools in front of the restoration worktable. Behind us, clearly visible on the mannequin, hung the slashed wedding gown—its severed embroidery dangling like open wounds against the ivory satin. We didn't use filters, dramatic background music, or fancy editing. We simply sat down, side by side, placed our phones on the table in front of us, and started a live broadcast across Bennett and Thread’s official social channels.

"Hello everyone," I began, looking straight into the lens. "I am Mara Bennett, owner of Bennett and Thread. Standing beside me is Belle Knox. Over the last forty-eight hours, many stories have been told about what happened at the Hawthorne Foundry. Now, we are going to show you the receipts."

For the next fifty minutes, Belle and I conducted a masterclass in systematic dismantling. We read the text messages chronologically, displaying the verified time stamps directly to the camera. We showed the forged signatures on the commercial loan documents. Belle showed the bank statements proving Caleb had been paying her rent under false pretenses while convincing her that I was his abusive captor. We displayed Denise’s direct messages promising financial kickbacks to ruin the wedding.

Over two hundred thousand people watched the stream live. The comment section was a waterfall of shock, validation, and blistering outrage directed at the Ward family. By the time I ended the broadcast, the narrative had flipped irrevocably. We hadn't just defended ourselves; we had handed the public the complete, unvarnished truth on a silver platter.
