Chapter 6 - Taking the Helm

Forty-eight hours later, I walked into the gleaming glass-and-steel lobby of Alderbridge Tower in downtown Columbus.

I wasn't accompanied by a timid smile or a stack of routine tax forms this time. Flanked on either side by Sofia Vega, two senior forensic partners from my firm, and a court-appointed independent compliance monitor, I stepped out of the private elevator onto the executive fiftieth floor.

The floor was chaotic. Telephones were ringing off their hooks, executive assistants were running between cubicles clutching manila folders, and hushed, terrified whispers died down the moment my heels clicked against the polished Italian marble.

Everyone knew what had happened in probate court. The local business journals had already run breaking headlines: Alderbridge Founder Grant Keene Sued for Multi-Million Trust Fraud by Whistleblower Daughter; Assets Frozen by Probate Court.

I walked directly into the grand boardroom. The thirty-foot mahogany table was surrounded by the seven members of Alderbridge’s board of directors—men and women in their fifties and sixties who had rubber-stamped Dad's decisions for decades in exchange for lucrative consulting fees and stock options.

At the head of the table sat Dad, looking haggard, unshaven, and visibly aged ten years in two days. Beside him was Marcus Vance and two newly retained criminal defense attorneys from a high-profile Chicago firm.

When I entered, Dad didn't yell. He merely glared at me with pure, unadulterated venom. ""This meeting is illegal,"" he rasped. ""My criminal counsel is filing an emergency interlocutory appeal to stay Judge Hart’s order.""

""File whatever you want, Grant,"" Sofia said coolly, taking a seat directly across from him. ""Until an appellate panel says otherwise, Judge Hart’s order is fully enforceable. And under Section 4.2 of the Alderbridge Corporate Charter, the Beatrice Keene Heritage Trust controls the single largest voting bloc of equity. Natalie Keene is the sole trustee. She holds the floor.""

I took my seat at the center of the table, folding my hands over a single manila folder. I looked around the room at the directors. Most of them refused to meet my gaze.

""Ladies and gentlemen of the board,"" I said, my voice steady and authoritative. ""I am not here today to engage in family drama. I am here as a fiduciary protecting the company’s capital and Aunt Beatrice’s legacy. Over the past seventy-two hours, our forensic team has uncovered an additional fourteen million dollars in unauthorized off-balance-sheet loans directed to subsidiaries owned entirely by Grant Keene. If federal prosecutors indict the sitting CEO while he remains in corporate control, Alderbridge’s credit facilities will be immediately terminated by our syndicate lenders, triggering automatic loan accelerations that will force this company into Chapter 11 bankruptcy by next Friday.""

Several board members gasped. Gregory Vance, an elderly commercial banker who had sat on the board for twenty years, sat up straight. ""Is this verified, Natalie?""

""Every single document is authenticated by certified audit reports,"" I said, sliding dossiers down both sides of the table. ""You have all been exposed to extreme personal liability for failing your duty of oversight. But there is a way to save this company, protect the four hundred employees working beneath us, and prevent an immediate liquidation.""

Dad slammed his fist on the table. ""Don't you dare listen to her! I founded this company! I built this tower! You owe your entire careers to me!""

""And you almost bankrupted us to buy chalets in Aspen and pay off gambling debts in Macau,"" I retorted sharply, pulling a fresh audit exhibit from my folder.

Dad froze, the color completely draining from his face once more. The room went dead silent.

""Yes, Dad,"" I said quietly. ""We found the wire transfers to the Wynn Macau VIP gaming club through your Cayman subsidiary. Did you really think offshore routing codes could hide twenty-four million dollars from a licensed forensic investigator?""

I turned back to the stunned board members.

""I call for an immediate vote of the board of directors. Item one: The immediate, permanent termination of Grant Keene as Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of Alderbridge Property Group, for cause. Item two: The appointment of an interim executive management committee pending a nationwide search. Item three: Full and voluntary cooperation with the Department of Justice, the SEC, and the IRS to negotiate a corporate non-prosecution agreement.""

""Seconded,"" Gregory Vance said immediately, not even looking at my father.

""All in favor?"" I asked.

One by one, every single hand around that table rose into the air.

Dad sat paralyzed as his corporate empire slipped through his fingers like dry sand. The men who had laughed at his jokes and flattered his ego for thirty years abandoned him without a single hesitation.

""Motion carries unanimously,"" I declared. ""Mr. Keene, you have sixty minutes to collect your personal belongings from your office. Security will escort you from the premises.""
