Chapter 2 - The Cracks in the Mask

The word ""larceny"" hung in the humid salty air like a guillotine blade waiting to fall.

The caterers in the driveway were setting up pristine white folding tables on the front lawn, their cheerful chatter providing a bizarre, surreal contrast to the silence suffocating the back patio. Richard Hartwell stepped forward, his eyes dark with fury and disbelief as he grabbed the Las Vegas receipts right out from under Ashley’s reach.

""Let me see that,"" Richard demanded, his voice trembling with an old soldier's discipline slipping into rage. He flipped through the transaction logs, his reading glasses sliding down his nose. ""ATM withdrawal... luxury cabana rental... five thousand dollars at a boutique jewelry store on the Strip? Ashley, what have you done?""

""Dad, don't look at that! She’s trying to ruin our family!"" Ashley sobbed, but there were no tears in her eyes—only the frantic panic of a trapped animal. She lunged toward David, grabbing his arm. ""David, please! You know how hard things have been for us! The pressure of the mortgage, the bills... I made some bad choices, okay? I wanted us to have nice things! I wanted us to look successful!""

David pulled his arm out of her grip as if her touch burned his skin. He took two steps back, staring at her as if she were a total stranger wearing his wife’s clothes. ""You told me you won that diamond tennis bracelet in an online contest. You stood in our kitchen and swore on your grandmother's memory that an influencer giveaway picked your name.""

""I did it for us!"" she shrieked. ""I didn't want you to feel like a failure compared to your college friends! Your mother was sitting on Harold's fortune, refusing to give you your early inheritance!""

""My early inheritance?"" David whispered, his voice trembling with genuine horror. ""My father worked fifty years building his logistics business. He spent seventy-hour weeks on loading docks so we would have security. He isn't even cold in the ground three years, and you're treating his life's work like a personal debit card?""

Linda walked over to her husband, her face pale as ash, peering over his shoulder at the financial records. Suddenly, her eyes widened. ""Richard... look at the date on this transfer from January. The eight thousand dollars.""

Richard squinted at the paper. ""What about it?""

""That’s the exact amount Ashley said she needed to bail her younger brother, Tommy, out of a bad car lease so he wouldn't get sued,"" Linda said, her voice dropping into a horrified whisper. She turned on Ashley with an intensity I had never seen in the gentle woman before. ""Tommy never saw a dime of that money, did he? Tommy was working two shifts at the warehouse all winter trying to pay off that car himself!""

""Mom, you don't understand—""

""Where did the eight thousand go, Ashley?"" Linda demanded, stepping directly into her daughter's space. ""Where did it go?""

Patricia cleared her throat, adjusting her glasses with clinical precision. ""According to the corresponding bank statement from TD Bank, account ending in 4108—an account held exclusively in Ashley’s maiden name—the eight thousand dollars was wired directly to an offshore sports betting platform registered in Curacao.""

The patio went completely still. Even the sound of the ocean waves seemed to mute.

David’s head snapped up. ""Sports betting? You don't even watch sports!""

""It wasn't for sports!"" Ashley blurted out, her composure completely disintegrating into hysterical defensiveness. ""It was an online trading pool! My friend from Pilates told me we could triple the money in two weeks! I was trying to win back the money I lost before you found out! I was trying to fix it!""

""You have a gambling problem,"" David whispered, the realization hitting him like a physical blow. He sank back onto a patio chair, burying his face in his hands. ""My God. The collection letters marked 'confidential' that kept coming in the mail... you told me they were promotional flyers. You told me the water shut-off notice last month was a billing error from the town.""

""David, please, look at me,"" Ashley begged, dropping to her knees beside his chair. ""I love you. Everything I did, I did because the stress was drowning me. Your mother has plenty of money! She lives alone in that huge four-bedroom house in Brookline! What does an old woman need all that money for anyway? She was just going to leave it to you! What difference does it make if we used it now?""

I walked over to the edge of the patio, looking down at her. ""The difference, Ashley, is that Harold and I spent our entire lives believing in honesty. When David married you, I welcomed you with open arms. When you said you were struggling, I gave freely because I thought my son was hurting. But you didn't just take my money. You took my peace. You made me feel like an unwelcome ghost in my own son's life.""

""Margaret, please,"" Ashley cried, reaching for the hem of my trousers. ""Don't call the police. Think of David. A scandal would ruin his career at the firm!""

Patricia closed the manila folder with a firm, echoing snap. ""Oh, Ashley, we haven't even gotten to the most critical document yet. That was just the prologue.""
