Chapter 3 - The Unmasking and the Lone Applause

The backyard went dead silent, save for the rhythmic buzzing of cicadas in the trees. Kyle blinked rapidly, his confident posture collapsing as he tried to laugh off the question. ""What kind of weird question is that? I’m doing great. Business is booming, got the house, the vehicles. Ballpark, maybe six hundred grand if you count assets."" He deliberately avoided mentioning liabilities, loans, or the massive liens suffocating his name. I didn't raise my voice; I didn't mock him. I kept my tone entirely flat, clinical, and calm. ""Leah and I crossed two point two million dollars last month."" The impact was instantaneous and devastating. The color drained from Kyle's cheeks so fast he looked physically ill, his mouth slightly open as his brain tried to compute the impossible math. Mom gasped, dropping a serving spoon into the potato salad with a wet splash, tears welling in her eyes as the fantasy world she had constructed over twenty years shattered into pieces. Dad froze mid-motion, his tongs hovering over the grill, staring at me as if I were a ghost speaking in an ancient tongue. ""That’s impossible,"" Dad stammered. ""You work a salary job!"" I explained calmly, detailing the eleven cash-flowing rental units, the seven years of weekend renovations, the calculated investments, and the total debt freedom. Aunt Carol whispered an astonished breath, while Britney furiously stared down at her lap, her designer facade cracking. Then, breaking through the suffocating silence, came a slow, deliberate sound. Clap. Clap. Clap. Grandpa Earl was standing up from his secluded table beneath the maple tree. He was clapping with genuine pride, tears glistening in the deep wrinkles around his eyes. ""That’s my boy,"" the old man shouted across the lawn, his voice trembling with fierce emotion. ""That’s my grandson! A self-made man who built it with his own two hands!"" Kyle violently shoved his chair back, knocking it onto the grass, and bolted inside the house without another word.
