Chapter 8 - The Aftermath and the Law

By midnight, the family gathering was completely destroyed. Lauren had packed her overnight bag, taken the keys to the SUV, and driven to a hotel downtown, leaving her wedding ring sitting on the mantelpiece next to a framed photograph of Nathan’s fake graduation ceremony. Nathan had locked himself in our old childhood bedroom, refusing to speak to anyone while Dad sat up on the sofa making frantic phone calls to high-priced defense attorneys he had known through his old business connections.

I drove home alone through the quiet, frost-dusted streets, feeling an overwhelming, unfamiliar sense of lightness. For decades, I had carried the invisible weight of being the Bennett family’s second-tier child. I had swallowed the sarcastic jibes about my teaching salary, endured the patronizing pats on the head, and worked myself to the bone to earn legitimate academic respect that my own parents never bothered to acknowledge. That night, the weight vanished.

On Monday morning, the inevitable legal avalanche began. As a state-employed academic department chair, I had a mandatory professional obligation to submit my findings to the State Department of Health and Licensing. I didn't do it out of vengeance; I did it because real patients were being exposed to an unqualified con artist.

The state regulatory board moved with terrifying speed. Within forty-eight hours, investigators served an emergency cease-and-desist order at Nathan’s downtown office. The walnut furniture, the imported leather recliners, and the gold-embossed door sign were cordoned off behind state evidence tape. Uniformed officers seized his client files, his billing computers, and the framed diplomas that had hung on his wall—which, upon forensic inspection, turned out to be high-resolution digital prints ordered from an offshore diploma mill.

The local news picked up the story by Friday. “Prominent Downtown Executive Therapist Arrested for Massive Credential Fraud and Identity Theft.” The headline ran alongside Nathan’s booking photo—a grim, haggard portrait of a man whose life of luxury had dissolved into county jail scrubs. His former corporate clients launched class-action lawsuits to recover hundreds of thousands of dollars in paid fees, while the real Dr. Nathan Edward Bennett filed a civil suit for catastrophic identity theft and reputational damage.

My parents emptied a significant portion of their retirement accounts to post Nathan’s bail and secure a premier criminal defense team. When Mom called me, begging me to testify as a character witness at his preliminary hearing, I gave her the only honest answer I had left.

“I won’t lie for him, Mom. Not anymore.”

She hung up the phone without saying goodbye, and for the next six months, our parents cut all communication with me.
