Chapter 3 - Locked Out at 3 AM

The mechanical rattle of Emma’s brass key scraping violently inside the keyhole broke the quiet of the corridor.

She turned it once, then twice, before rattling the heavy brass lever handle with growing frustration.

"What the hell?" her muffled voice drifted through the soundproof oak door.

She tried again, her breath smelling faintly of tequila even through the keyway, before she jammed her digital RFID key fob against the proximity scanner.

A sharp, angry triple-beep chimed through the hall, followed by the electronic lock's red rejection light flashing three times.

Emma hammered her palm against the wood with furious rhythm.

"Julian! Open the damn door! The stupid fob is broken again!"

I took a slow sip of my bourbon, leaning back against the leather sofa, making no move toward the foyer.

Her banging grew louder, more frantic, echoing through the prestigious, quiet hallway where Fortune 500 executives and surgeons lived.

"Julian! I know you're in there! Stop playing games and let me in right now! My feet are killing me!"

Across the hall, the door of Unit 14A cracked open, and Dr. Harrison peered out with an expression of pure, unadulterated annoyance.

"Young lady, do you have any idea what time it is?" the doctor scolded sharply. "People have morning rounds! Stop that infernal racket!"

Emma whipped around, her face flushed crimson from alcohol and humiliation. "Mind your own business, old man! My boyfriend locked me out!"

"He isn't your boyfriend, Miss Vance," a stern, authoritative voice echoed from the elevator vestibule.

Stepping into the hallway was Marcus, the six-foot-four head of building security, accompanied by two night-shift guards in dark uniforms.

Emma’s eyes widened with indignant disbelief. "Marcus? Thank God. Julian changed the locks or the scanner glitched. Open this door with your master key."

"I can't do that, Miss Vance," Marcus said calmly, crossing his massive arms across his chest. "As of midnight, your name was officially removed from the authorized occupant registry for Unit 14B."

Emma froze, her jaw slackening as if she had just been slapped across the face with a frozen towel.

"What are you talking about?" she shrieked, her voice cracking into a shrill pitch. "I live here! This is my apartment! We've lived here for two years!"

"The lease is registered solely under the name of Julian Cole," Marcus replied with impenetrable professional detachment. "He is the sole leaseholder, sole financial guarantor, and primary resident. He has executed his legal right to withdraw your guest access privileges."

"Guest?" Emma screamed, pointing a trembling, manicured finger at the locked door. "I am not a guest! I am his partner! Julian! Open this door right now or I swear to God I will call the police!"

Inside the apartment, I casually picked up my phone, unlocked the screen, and tapped on the building's internal intercom app.

"Marcus," my voice broadcast smoothly through the hallway speaker mounted above the doorway.

Emma lunged toward the speaker, her eyes wild. "Julian! What is wrong with you? Let me inside! All my clothes, my jewelry, my makeup—everything I own is in there!"

"Your belongings have been carefully packed into your three suitcases and placed in the lobby storage room, Emma," I said through the intercom, my tone chilled to absolute zero. "Marcus has the retrieval paperwork waiting for you at the concierge desk."

"Julian, you can't do this to me!" she wailed, tears of pure, desperate rage finally streaming down her foundation-caked cheeks. "Where am I supposed to go at three in the morning? I don't have anywhere to stay!"

"Call Tyler the bartender," I replied calmly. "You gave him your number because you're a free, independent woman who doesn't need my permission to breathe."

I paused for two seconds, letting the silence swallow her whole.

"And remember, Emma... we're not married. I don't own you."

May you like

The intercom clicked off with a final, definitive snap.

Outside, Emma let out a guttural shriek of raw fury, pounding her fists against the door until Marcus firmly took her by the elbows and led her sobbing toward the service elevators.
