Chapter 6 - The Boardroom Shadow

The silence in the reception tent was suffocating. Every pair of eyes bounced back and forth between Victoria Sterling’s gleaming diamond watch, Alex’s stone-cold expression, and Sophie, who felt like she had been plunged into freezing water for the third time in two hours.
The guests were frozen, half-empty champagne flutes suspended in mid-air. Outside, cameras were clicking frantically through the perimeter hedges as the paparazzi realized they were capturing the scandal of the season.
Sophie looked at Alex. Her heart pounded against her ribs. Had she jumped from one cage straight into another? Was this entire afternoon just another calculated maneuver in a high-stakes corporate chess match she didn't understand? Was she just a pawn Alex used to escape a forced marriage with the Sterling dynasty?
“Alex,” Sophie said softly, her voice remarkably steady despite the hurricane raging in her chest. “Is what she saying true?”
Alex didn't flinch. He turned to face Sophie fully, deliberately ignoring Victoria’s triumphant glare. “The merger proposal exists, Sophie. Her father has been aggressively pushing for it for six months through my legacy board members. But I have never signed a single paper agreeing to marry Victoria Sterling. Not one.”
“You didn't have to sign it yet, Alexander!” Victoria interjected sharply, stepping forward, the diamonds at her throat glittering violently under the tent lights. “The board’s proxy committee held the authority! The public announcement was scheduled for next Friday! Do you have any idea what this theatrical farce does to our stock price? Wall Street will butcher Reed Global on Monday morning! They’ll say you’ve had an emotional breakdown!”
“Let them sell,” Alex said with lethal indifference. He stepped around the dessert table, positioning himself directly between Victoria and Sophie, effectively shielding Sophie from the socialite’s glare. “Every share your father’s hedge fund dumps on the open market will be bought back by my private capital trust by noon. I don't need your father’s ports, Victoria. And I certainly don't need his spoiled, venomous daughter.”
Victoria’s manicured composure cracked, an ugly sneer warping her perfect features. “You arrogant bastard. You think you’re untouchable? You think you can just discard the Sterling family like trash for a girl who smells like fertilizer and dirt?” She pointed an accusatory finger at Sophie. “Look at her! She was being sold for pennies by her fiancé less than two hours ago! Grant Holloway contacted my father’s office yesterday morning, Alexander! Did you know that?”
The revelation hit the room like a mortar shell. Sophie stepped out from behind Alex, her eyes narrowing into cold slits. “What did you just say?”
Victoria laughed, a cruel, mocking sound that echoed off the canvas walls. “Oh, did your little fiancé forget to mention that part? Grant knew Alex was obsessed with you. He’s been tracking Alex’s private jet movements for months. When Alex confirmed his attendance at this pathetic wedding, Grant reached out to our family office. He offered to sell us the dirt on Alex’s obsession—to create a public scandal that would force Alex to step down as CEO and hand control to the board. Grant didn't just want Alex’s money. He was playing both sides of the board!”
Sophie felt the pieces fall together with sickening clarity. Grant hadn't just been drowning in business debt. He had orchestrated a multi-layered extortion scheme, attempting to squeeze cash out of Alex while simultaneously peddling corporate blackmail to Alex’s greatest rivals. He had turned her wedding day into an international auction block.
“Where is Grant now, Victoria?” Sophie demanded, taking two deliberate steps toward the socialite.
Victoria rolled her eyes dismissively. “Waiting in a town car by the front gate, waiting for me to give him his retainer check so he can skip the country before your local sheriff figures out his little embezzlement schemes. But now that Alexander has publicly embarrassed me, neither of you gets a dime. In fact, my father’s attorneys are filing an emergency injunction right now to freeze every asset associated with Bennett Blooms as a material witness in a corporate fraud investigation!”
Victoria looked around the room, expecting to see terror on Sophie’s face. She expected tears. She expected a small-town girl to crumble under the sheer weight of billionaire legal threats.
Instead, Sophie Bennett smiled.
It was a slow, terrifying smile that made Victoria’s smug expression falter.
“You really think you’re the smartest person in the room, don't you, Victoria?” Sophie said, her voice dropping into a register of deadly calm. She reached into the pocket of her wedding skirt and pulled out a small, metallic flash drive that Maggie had slipped into her hand right before they entered the tent.
“What is that?” Victoria asked, a flicker of unease creeping into her eyes.
“This,” Sophie said, holding up the drive, “contains five years of financial audits from Bennett Blooms. Grant was sloppy. He thought because I spent my days in the greenhouse, I didn't understand the books. Two years ago, I noticed strange routing numbers funneling through our business merchant account into an offshore shell company called ‘Sterling Maritime Holdings LLC.’”

Victoria went completely white. The two attorneys behind her stiffened visibly, exchanging horrified glances.
“Grant wasn't just your blackmailer, was he?” Sophie continued, stepping directly into Victoria’s personal space until the heiress had to tilt her head back. “He was your father’s money-laundering funnel for unauthorized political campaign contributions in this state. He used my flower shop’s event invoicing to wash your family’s dirty cash. And every single invoice has your father’s personal signature stamped on the authorization line.”
