Chapter 4 - The Coffee Shop Showdown

On Tuesday afternoon, Marcus sent the official legal notices. The results were instantaneous. Zara deleted her dramatic Instagram story within forty-five minutes of receiving the courier-delivered envelope at her workplace, and the fake reviews on my firm’s page disappeared like smoke.

Then came the frantic calls from Maya. First three, then ten, then twenty-four missed calls in a single afternoon. When I didn't answer, she sent a text:

“Liam, please. We need to talk like adults. I’m at the Blue Heron Café across from your office. Just give me fifteen minutes. If you don’t come, I’ll wait here until you leave work. Please, don't let lawyers ruin everything we built.”

I showed the message to Marcus over the phone.

""Go,"" Marcus advised. ""Keep your phone in your front shirt pocket with the voice recorder running. Do not sit on the side of the booth that traps you. Order a black coffee, let her speak, keep your voice at room temperature, and make her confirm on tape that her allegations of abuse were fabricated. It will be the final nail in her coffin.""

Ten minutes later, I walked into the café. The bell above the door chimed, and I spotted her immediately in a corner booth near the back.

Maya looked terrible. The polished, glamorous woman from the engagement party was gone. Her hair was pulled back into a messy bun, she wore no makeup, and her oversized sweater looked like something she had borrowed from Evan. When she saw me approaching, her eyes lit up with genuine hope.

""Liam! You came,"" she breathed, standing up as if to hug me.

""Sit down, Maya,"" I said, remaining standing for a second before sliding into the opposite wooden chair, keeping my arms crossed on the table. ""You have fifteen minutes. What do you want?""

She bit her lower lip, tears welling up in her eyes. ""Why are you doing this with lawyers, Liam? Marcus sent a threatening letter to Zara! Her boss saw it! You’re terrifying my friends! Since when did you become so cruel?""

""Cruel?"" I chuckled softly, shaking my head in pure disbelief. ""Zara tried to destroy my career on the internet with fabricated claims of abuse because I kicked an unfaithful partner out of my own home. You let her do it. In fact, you cheered her on.""

""I was hurting!"" she cried, lowering her voice when nearby patrons turned to look. ""You humiliated me in front of everybody! You threw that ring at Evan like I was a piece of meat! Do you know how humiliating that was?""

""Do you know how humiliating it was to stand in my own living room while your best friend bragged that you keep a backup lover on the bench in case I don't measure up?"" I leaned forward slightly, looking directly into her eyes. ""Tell me, Maya. Was Zara lying?""

She swallowed hard. Her gaze darted away toward the coffee machine. ""It was just college banter, Liam. Evan and I have history, yes, but we never... we didn't cross physical lines until—""

She stopped herself instantly, her eyes widening in horror at what had almost slipped out.

""Until when, Maya?"" I asked, my voice chillingly calm. ""Until last Tuesday when you were at his loft? Or the weekend I went upstate to visit my parents?""

Her face flushed crimson. ""Nothing happened! We just talked! He was comforting me because you were always working! You were obsessed with making partner, and I felt ignored! Why is it always my fault? You pushed me away!""

""I worked eighty hours a week to save for our future, Maya,"" I said, leaning back. ""And you spent that time plotting with Evan how to get common-law rights to my assets. I saw the shared iPad notes. I saw the messages calling me a 'stepping stone' and a 'foundation for your penthouse.'""

All the color drained from Maya's face again. Her hands began to shake violently on the tabletop, spilling a few drops of her latte onto the saucer. The realization hit her like an express train: I didn't just suspect her infidelity—I possessed the entire archive.

""Liam... please,"" she whispered, her voice cracking. ""That was just fantasy. Evan talks big, he was feeding me ideas, but I love you. He’s useless, Liam! He doesn't have a real job, his apartment is a filthy mess, he doesn't even have a car! He told me yesterday that I couldn't stay with him for more than a few days because his landlord doesn't allow long-term guests! He doesn't care about me! You're the only man who ever truly loved me!""

""And that,"" I said quietly, ""is your real tragedy, Maya. You traded a man who built a castle for you for a boy who couldn't even offer you a spare bedroom.""

I stood up, sliding a five-dollar bill onto the table to cover my untouched coffee.

""Your boxes are with the concierge at my building. They will hold them until tomorrow at noon. If you don't collect them by then, they go to the Salvation Army. Have a nice life, Maya.""

She grabbed the edge of my coat as I turned. ""Liam, no! Don't walk away! What about us? What about four years?""

I gently peeled her fingers off my coat fabric. ""You traded four years for a punchline at a party. The transaction is complete.""
