Chapter 7 - The Confrontation

I was in the middle of reviewing pharmaceutical orders at the front nursing station when the wooden double doors of the clinic flew open with a violent bang. The cold wind howled through the foyer, scattering papers across the linoleum.
A man stumbled in, shivering uncontrollably, his teeth chattering so loud I could hear them from ten feet away. His hair was plastered to his forehead with freezing rain, his designer coat was splattered with Arctic muck, and his lips were an alarming shade of pale violet.
I walked over with a thermal blanket, slipping instinctively into doctor mode. ""Sir, you need to sit down immediately before hypothermia sets in—""
The man looked up.
My breath caught in my throat for half a second.
""Anna..."" Mark gasped, his voice cracking into a ragged sob. He dropped his leather bag onto the wet floor and reached out with both trembling hands, attempting to grab my wrists. ""Anna, it's you... My god, Anna, I found you.""
I took two deliberate steps backward, completely out of his reach. The initial shock passed over me like a brief gust of wind, leaving behind nothing but an eerie, pristine calm. There was no anger. No racing heartbeat. No urge to cry or demand explanations. Looking at him was like looking at a stranger who had accidentally wandered into the wrong room.
""What are you doing here, Mark?"" I asked, my voice as flat and even as a frozen lake.
""I came for you!"" he choked out, falling to his knees right there on the clinic floor, unzipping his coat with numb fingers to yank out the velvet jewelry box. ""I canceled everything with Rachel. I haven't spoken to her in a year! She was a mistake, Anna, a horrible, toxic mistake. I know I broke your heart, but I swear to you on my life, I've spent every single second of every day regretting it. Look at this."" He snapped open the box, revealing the massive, glittering ring. ""Come home with me. We can get married tomorrow. We can have the life we planned. Don't punish yourself in this frozen wasteland anymore!""
Several nurses and three local patients sitting in the waiting area turned their heads, watching the scene unfold in stunned silence.
""Get up, Mark,"" I said quietly, crossing my arms over my white lab coat. ""You're making a scene in a medical facility.""
""I'm not leaving without you!"" he cried, tears cutting clean lines through the dirt on his cheeks. ""You love me, Anna. You gave me four years! You don't just erase four years because of one bad night!""
""It wasn't one bad night, Mark,"" I replied, looking directly down into his desperate eyes. ""It was four years of you showing me that whenever the world demanded a choice, I was the one you felt safe discarding. You didn't come here because you love me. You came here because your ego can't handle the fact that I survived without you. You thought I was a plant you could forget to water and find waiting whenever you wanted. But I'm not a plant. I'm a human being.""

""Anna, please—""
Before he could reach for my ankle, a heavy shadow fell across the entire doorway behind him.
