Chapter 4 - Ghost Messages

In the lower forty-eight, Mark’s life had devolved into an absolute nightmare of his own making.
He had expected that within three or four days, Anna’s anger would soften. In all their years together, she had always been the reasonable anchor. She was the one who smoothed over disagreements, who ordered his favorite coffee when he was grumpy, and who quietly bore the burden of his erratic schedule. He was convinced that this was just a dramatic phase—a justifiable temper tantrum to teach him a lesson.
He sent fifty emails a day to her old work address, only to receive an automated bounce-back message informing him that Dr. Anna Miller had resigned from St. Jude’s Memorial with immediate effect. He visited her hospital, but the security guards had his photograph taped behind the desk and threatened to arrest him for stalking if he crossed the lobby.
Meanwhile, Rachel moved into his empty apartment uninvited.
""Marky, my anxiety is through the roof because of all the noise in my building,"" she whined, draping herself across the sofa where Anna used to read her surgical journals. ""You don't mind if I crash here for a few weeks, do you? Besides, you shouldn't be alone right now. Anna was so cruel to you. What kind of person cancels a wedding without even having an adult conversation?""
For the first time in his life, Mark looked at Rachel and didn't feel the intoxicating rush of being a heroic protector. He felt an overwhelming wave of disgust. He noticed the calculated way she checked her reflection in the darkened television screen while claiming to have a panic attack. He noticed how she never offered to pay for groceries, how she left half-empty wine glasses on the furniture, and how she whined incessantly whenever he mentioned Anna's name.
""She didn't cancel without an adult conversation, Rachel,"" Mark snapped one evening, his voice hollow and exhausted. ""I canceled it. I handed our paperwork back to her so I could hold your hand because you had a bad day.""
""I was suicidal, Mark!"" Rachel gasped, her eyes instantly brimming with rehearsed tears.

""No, you weren't,"" Mark said, his voice dropping into a terrifyingly cold realization. ""You had a fight with your casual boyfriend and you knew exactly which buttons to press to make me abandon the woman I was supposed to marry. And I was stupid enough to let you do it.""
Mark spent his nights scouring social media, searching the national medical registries, trying to find where Anna had been assigned. Her name had vanished from every regional directory. She had completely scrubbed her digital footprint. She was a ghost, and the silence she had left behind was louder than any screaming argument he had ever endured.
