Chapter 2 - The Hallway Ambush

The rhythmic clatter of heeled boots on vintage hardwood resonated up the stairwell long before Madison reached the landing. I stood on my side of the door, peering through the peephole. Her breath came in short puffs from the three-flight climb, but her face wore the triumphant, self-satisfied grin of someone who genuinely believed the universe revolved around her convenience. Behind her, two burly movers were lugging a massive mirrored dresser, groaning under its weight.

""Careful with the edges, guys!"" Madison called out, her voice loud enough to wake every tenant in the building. ""That was Mom’s antique vanity! Just set it in the hallway if the front room isn't cleared yet.""

She slipped the brass key into my deadbolt.

Before she could rotate the cylinder, I yanked the door inward. Madison gasped, nearly tumbling forward as her hand grasped thin air.

""What the hell do you think you’re doing, Madison?"" I asked, my voice deadly quiet, devoid of the familiar trembling deference she had exploited since childhood.

Madison blinked, recovering her composure within seconds. She rolled her eyes, blew an exasperated strand of blonde hair from her forehead, and crossed her arms. ""Oh, stop being dramatic, Nora. God, you scared me! Mom said you bolted after dinner like a five-year-old having a tantrum. We figured you’d already packed your overnight bags and headed back to Dayton to stay at the house.""

""Packed my bags?"" I stared at her, genuinely stunned by the sheer magnitude of her delusion. ""Madison, this is my apartment. I pay twelve hundred dollars a month. My name is on the legal lease. Did you actually think you could roll up with a moving truck and steal my home?""

""It’s not stealing, you psycho!"" Madison snapped, her voice spiking in pitch. ""Mom and Dad helped you with your car down payment four years ago, remember? Family shares! You're single, Nora! You have no kids, you work from home three days a week, and you don’t need two bedrooms in the middle of Victorian Village! I’m starting my marketing internship downtown next week, and I need an aesthetic, safe space where I can entertain clients. Mom said you were totally fine moving back into my old bedroom in Dayton so I could take this over.""

""Mom lied to you,"" I stated coldly. ""And you knew she was lying. You stood at Thanksgiving dinner and announced it because you wanted to ambush me in front of the whole family so I wouldn't say no. Well, the answer was no yesterday, and it's hell no today.""

The two movers had reached the landing, breathing heavily, resting the vanity on the worn runner rug. ""Excuse me, miss,"" the taller mover muttered awkwardly, wiping sweat from his forehead. ""Are we taking this inside or what? We're on an hourly clock.""

""Take it right into the master bedroom,"" Madison directed, pointing past my shoulder.

""If you take one single step across this threshold,"" I said, looking the mover dead in the eye, ""I will call the Columbus Police Department and have you arrested for criminal trespassing and burglary. This is my private residence. This woman does not live here, she does not have a lease, and she has zero legal authority to permit entry.""

The movers exchanged an uneasy glance. ""Look, lady,"" the tall one said to Madison, ""we don't get involved in family drama. You said this unit was vacant and ready for drop-off.""

""It is vacant! She's leaving!"" Madison shrieked, her mask of polished sweetness slipping completely off. She turned on me, stepping into my personal space, her manicured finger jabbing at my chest. ""You ruin everything, Nora! You've always been jealous of me! Just give me the damn keys and go to Mom's! You're humiliating me!""

""You humiliated yourself the minute you hired a moving truck for an apartment you don't rent,"" I replied.

I reached out, snatched Mom’s spare key directly out of the deadbolt, and shoved it deep into my coat pocket. Then, without another word, I stepped back into my foyer and slammed the heavy oak door shut. I threw both the deadbolt and the security chain.

From the hallway came a barrage of hysterical pounding. ""Nora! Open this door right now! I swear to God, Mom is going to hear about this! Open the door!""

I ignored her completely. My heart was pounding like a war drum, but my mind had suddenly snapped into crystalline focus. I picked up my phone, dialed my landlord's emergency number, and said, ""Mr. Henderson? This is Nora Bennett in 3B. I need an emergency lock change immediately, and there is an illegal moving operation blocking the building driveway.""
