Chapter 6 - The Paper Trail of Greed

Uncle Arthur stepped forward with the cool, calculated confidence of a veteran litigator. He opened his leather case and placed three neatly bound stacks of documents onto the clerk's desk.

""Your Honor, marked as Exhibit A is the verified closing disclosure from the sale of the decedent’s home on May 18th. The net proceeds of $240,000 were deposited into the estate account ending in 4401. Marked as Exhibit B are the bank statements from First Federal spanning May through August, obtained via emergency subpoena earlier this morning.""

Uncle Arthur turned and looked directly at Garrett.

""As the court will see, between June 1st and July 15th, the executor executed six separate transfers totaling $184,000 from the estate checking account into an account registered to 'Vanguard Horizon Holdings LLC'—an entity formed by Garrett Miller three days after our client's grandmother was laid to rest.""

Judge Vance flipped through the pages, his expression darkening with every passing second. ""Mr. Miller's counsel, care to explain why estate funds were funneled into an LLC owned exclusively by the fiduciary?""

Garrett's public attorney stood up slowly, clearly horrified by the evidence he hadn't been shown by his client. ""Your Honor... my client maintains that these transfers were made in good faith as short-term liquidity management to protect the principal from inflation.""

""By buying into an unregulated cryptocurrency platform based in the Cayman Islands?"" Arthur countered sharply. ""Exhibit C, Your Honor, is the public ledger transaction log tied to Mr. Garrett Miller’s digital wallet. On July 20th, the entire balance of that account was liquidated. It wasn't 'frozen' as Mr. Miller claimed to his family last night. He lost ninety thousand dollars on margin trading, and the remaining ninety-four thousand dollars was wired into a personal brokerage account that purchased luxury items, including tickets for a Caribbean cruise and payments toward a recreational watercraft.""

Behind me, in the gallery, my mother let out a strangled sob. ""Garrett... you told me the cruise was a gift...""

""Silence in the gallery!"" Judge Vance ordered, his voice thunderous. He leaned over the high wooden bench, staring down at Garrett with cold disgust. ""Mr. Miller, are you aware that as an executor, commingling estate funds with personal assets is a direct violation of probate law, and using those funds for speculative trading constitutes criminal embezzlement?""

Garrett looked around the room like a trapped animal. The swagger, the golden-boy charm, the dismissive arrogance that had protected him his entire life—all of it had completely evaporated.

""I was going to pay it back!"" Garrett blubbered, tears finally spilling down his cheeks. ""I swear to God, Judge, I was going to pay it back! If Reed had just signed the waiver, I had a buyer lined up for the boat! I could have put thirty thousand back! Reed has a good job! He didn't need the money! He’s just doing this to punish me!""

""To punish you?"" Judge Vance took off his glasses and dropped them onto the bench. ""Your brother is sitting before this court in a wheelchair with surgical drains visible beneath his clothes, having survived a life-threatening illness, while you used your deceased grandmother’s money to sunbathe on a cruise ship. And you have the unmitigated gall to claim he is punishing you?""

Judge Vance picked up his pen and began writing aggressively in the docket book.

""The petition for final accounting is hereby denied with extreme prejudice. The court immediately revokes the letters of administration issued to Garrett Miller. Garrett Miller is removed as executor effective immediately. Reed Miller is hereby appointed successor administrator with full investigative authority.""

Judge Vance paused, his eyes locking onto Garrett with deadly seriousness.

""Furthermore, pursuant to state probate statute, this court finds probable cause of intentional fiduciary fraud and grand larceny exceeding one hundred thousand dollars. Bailiff, take Mr. Garrett Miller into custody. Clerk, refer this complete file to the District Attorney's Financial Crimes Division for immediate criminal indictment.""
