Chapter 6 - The Digital Deed

Richard blinked, his eyes darting across the digital legal seal, the notarized signatures, and the electronic wire transfer receipt displayed on my phone. The color instantly drained from his face, leaving him a sickening shade of gray. The swagger that had defined him all evening evaporated like mist under a blowtorch.

""What... what is this?"" Richard stammered, his hand reaching out instinctively before he pulled it back, trembling. ""Apex Capital... they wouldn't assign the paper without my authorization. I’m the primary guarantor!""

""When a debtor defaults on two consecutive accelerated cure notices, the senior lienholder has the unilateral right to sell the underlying promissory notes at par to any qualified institutional buyer,"" I explained, scrolling smoothly through the nine-page document. ""My corporate holding entity, Vance-Mahola Capital, just wired one million, five hundred and fifty thousand dollars to Apex Capital’s escrow department. We bought the first, second, and third position liens outright.""

""You... you bought the debt?"" Aracelis shrieked, snatching the phone from my hand to inspect the screen herself. Her eyes frantically skimmed the text, reading the legal confirmation again and again. ""Where did you get one point five million dollars?! You work at a charity clinic! You don't have this kind of money! This is fake! You mocked this up on a computer to scare us!""

""I haven't worked at the clinic in over three years, Aracelis,"" I said, retrieving my phone from her shaking hands. ""I co-founded a healthcare cold-chain logistics enterprise called BioTrack Systems. We sold our diagnostic software suite to Cardinal Health in May for seventy-two million dollars. My net proceeds after taxes were forty-one million.""

The silence that fell over the parlor was absolute. Mara’s wine glass slipped slightly from her hand, spilling red liquid across her beige designer skirt, but she didn't even flinch. She just stared at me with her mouth hanging wide open, her eyes bulging with disbelief.

""Forty... forty-one million?"" Mara squeaked, her voice trembling. ""You're... you're a multi-millionaire?""

My mother slowly pushed herself up from the velvet armchair. Her aristocratic composure had completely shattered. She reached out toward me, her wrinkled hands shaking, her voice trembling with a mixture of shock, confusion, and sudden, desperate reverence.

""Mahola... my baby,"" Mother whispered, taking an unsteady step toward me. ""Why didn't you tell us? Why would you keep such wonderful news from your own mother? We could have celebrated together! We could have had a proper feast!""

""Because if I had told you,"" I answered, looking directly into her eyes without an ounce of warmth, ""you would have demanded that I hand my hard-earned capital over to Aracelis and Richard to bail them out of their endless failures. You would have told me that my duty as the younger daughter was to sacrifice for the golden child.""

""That's not true!"" Mother pleaded, tears springing to her eyes. ""We love you! We have always loved you!""

""You sat me at the children’s table, Mother,"" I stated flatly. ""You let Mara mock my career. You let Richard threaten my safety. You let Aracelis write my name on a scrap of paper by a high chair. You didn't love me when you thought I was poor. You only love what you can take from me.""

Aracelis collapsed onto the sofa, clutching her head in her hands. ""This can't be happening. Richard, tell me this isn't happening. What about the house? What about the car dealerships?""

""The dealerships are collateral on the third-position mortgage,"" I said, turning to Richard. ""And as of twenty minutes ago, I hold that lien too.""
