Chapter 4 - The Smear Campaign

By seven o'clock Sunday morning, the scandal had metastasized across every screen in New England.

The thirty-second clip of Adrian kissing Elise on the dance floor had garnered over twelve million views on TikTok and Facebook under the hashtag #BillionaireWeddingCrash. But the narrative was rapidly shifting. Nolan Pierce had spent the early hours of the morning doing damage control, hiring a ruthless crisis PR firm out of Manhattan.

Elise sat in the sunlit recovery room of Rhode Island Hospital, watching her mother sleep peacefully under the soft hum of the cardiac monitor. Her mother’s color had already improved dramatically; the specialized medical team Adrian had brought in was working miracles. But on the mounted television in the corner of the room, Nolan’s face suddenly appeared on the morning news segment.

“I was coerced,” Nolan said into the camera, looking haggard with artfully disheveled hair, playing the role of the terrified victim to perfection. Beside him sat Vanessa, dabbing at dry eyes with a monogrammed handkerchief. “Adrian Moretti used his notorious underworld connections to corner me on the happiest day of my life. My ex-wife, Elise, has been stalking us for months. When she couldn't break up our marriage, she brought an armed criminal to extort nearly one hundred thousand dollars from my business.”

Elise dropped her coffee cup onto the bedside table, her hands shaking with indignation. “He’s insane,” she whispered to the empty room. “He’s utterly insane.”

The door to the private room clicked open, and Adrian walked in, holding two fresh cups of dark roast coffee and a bakery box of warm almond croissants. He wore a simple charcoal cashmere sweater and tailored trousers, looking rested, elegant, and completely unbothered by the media storm erupting outside.

“Don’t let bad acting spoil your breakfast,” Adrian said softly, setting the breakfast on the small table near the window.

“Adrian, they’re dragging your name through the mud on national television!” Elise said, rushing toward him, gesturing wildly at the screen. “They’re painting you as a violent gangster and me as an unhinged stalker! The school district superintendent just sent me an urgent email requesting an emergency administrative hearing on Monday morning! They might suspend my teaching license!”

Adrian didn’t panic. He walked over to the television, calmly clicked the power button, and silenced Nolan’s whiny voice. Then he turned to Elise, his expression steady and comforting.

“Elise, look at me.”

She stopped pacing and met his deep, steady gaze.

“A dog only barks loudly when it’s backed into a corner and realizes the fence is electrified,” Adrian said with a quiet smile. “Nolan thinks the media is his shield. He believes that by playing the victim, he can rally public sympathy and scare me into settling out of court to protect my privacy.”

“Isn’t it working?” she asked, her voice tight with worry. “Your businesses… your reputation…”

Adrian chuckled, a low, resonant sound that instantly lowered the tension in the room. “My reputation has survived international corporate takeovers, federal grand juries that found nothing, and three recessions. A thirty-year-old boy crying on television because his ex-wife outsmarted him is not a threat. It is an opening.”

He pulled a thin tablet from his leather briefcase and handed it to her. On the screen was a detailed dossier containing bank routing numbers, offshore shell company registrations, and timestamped customs declarations.

“What is this?” Elise asked, scrolling through the dense financial spreadsheets.

“While Nolan was busy giving tearful interviews at three in the morning,” Adrian explained, “my forensic accounting team was pulling apart Pierce Logistics. Do you remember the Newport marine warehouse you co-signed for back in 2023?”

“Of course. Nolan told me it was used to store surplus automotive parts.”

“It wasn't storing auto parts, Elise. Nolan and Vanessa’s father have been using that bonded warehouse to smuggle unregistered luxury European sports cars into the United States, dodging millions in federal excise taxes. They were using your personal Social Security number to register the import dummy corporations.”

Elise gasped, the blood draining from her face. “My Social Security number? If federal agents raided that warehouse, I would have gone to federal prison!”

“Yes,” Adrian said, his jaw tightening, the predatory edge returning to his eyes. “He didn't just abandon you, Elise. He set you up to be his federal scapegoat if the authorities ever knocked on the door. He kept you on that debt so your name would remain on the corporate charter.”

Elise sank into the leather armchair, trembling from the sheer malice of Nolan’s betrayal. She had spent six years cooking for that man, ironing his shirts, encouraging his ambitions, and holding his hand through every failure. And all the while, he had been building a cage for her.

“What do we do?” she whispered, looking up at Adrian.

Adrian leaned down, resting his hands on the arms of her chair, his face inches from hers. “We don’t run, and we don’t hide. Tomorrow morning, you and I are going to walk into the state press club together. We are going to hold a press conference. And we are going to bury Nolan Pierce under the weight of his own greed.”
