Chapter 10 - Where We Belong

Six months later, spring had arrived along the rocky shores of Newport, Rhode Island.
The salty breeze off the Atlantic Ocean carried the sweet scent of blooming lilacs and honeysuckle. On the sprawling green lawn of the historic oceanfront estate that Adrian had recently restored, a long white linen table was set for an intimate, joyful celebration.
Martha Carter sat at the head of the table, looking radiant and healthy, laughing heartily as Marcus, Adrian’s usually stoic head of security, playfully argued with her about the proper way to season traditional clam chowder. Nearby, teachers and children from the newly opened Carter Literacy Centers ran across the grass, flying colorful kites against the azure spring sky.
Elise stood near the cliffside stone balustrade, holding a glass of sparkling cider, watching the waves crash against the golden rocks below.
She wore a simple, elegant emerald silk dress that billowed gently in the ocean wind. In six months, her entire world had transformed. The debt that had haunted her for years was erased; the foundation she directed had already built three modern libraries for inner-city children; and for the first time in her thirty-one years, she woke up every single morning feeling safe, cherished, and deeply loved.
A pair of strong, familiar arms wrapped gently around her waist from behind, pulling her back against a broad, warm chest.
Elise leaned her head back against Adrian’s shoulder with a contented sigh, resting her hands over his. “You’re supposed to be hosting our guests, Mr. Moretti.”
Adrian pressed a soft, lingering kiss to the sensitive spot beneath her ear, making a delicious shiver run down her spine. “The guests are fully occupied by your mother’s cooking lessons and Marcus’s terrible jokes. I only care about being where my heart is.”
Elise smiled, turning in his embrace so she could look up into the handsome face that had once terrified an entire ballroom of elites. The sharp, dangerous lines of his jaw were still there, the lethal authority that commanded empires remained unbroken, but when he looked down at her, his dark eyes held only warmth, devotion, and peace.
“Do you remember what you said to Nolan on the dance floor that night?” Elise asked softly, her fingers gently playing with the collar of his open linen shirt.
“Which part?” Adrian replied with a slow smile. “The part where I told him he made a mistake he couldn't take back, or the part where I kissed you?”
“The part where you said I deserved a better man,” she whispered, her eyes shining with emotion. “And you told him I found one.”
Adrian’s expression softened, growing serious and infinitely tender. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined mahogany box.
Elise’s breath caught in her throat.
Adrian didn't drop to one knee out of theatrical convention. Instead, he took her hand, holding it firmly between both of his, anchoring her with his unwavering gaze. He opened the box to reveal an exquisite vintage cushion-cut sapphire ring, surrounded by a delicate halo of brilliant diamonds—timeless, unbreakable, and entirely unique.
“Six months ago, you walked into my life and showed me that loyalty, honor, and courage aren't just words men use to negotiate contracts,” Adrian said, his voice deep and thick with raw feeling. “You survived a storm that would have broken anyone else, and you came out of it with your kindness intact. I don’t want to just be the man who protected you, Elise. I want to be the man who builds a life with you. I want to wake up beside you, laugh with you, and stand between you and the rest of the world for the rest of my days.”
He lifted the ring, his hands steady, his eyes asking the only question that mattered.
“Elise Carter, will you marry me?”
Tears of pure, unadulterated happiness spilled over Elise’s eyelashes, sparkling in the golden afternoon sun. She didn't hesitate for a single heartbeat. There was no fear, no doubt, no ghost of the past lingering in the shadows of her heart.
“Yes,” Elise whispered, her voice ringing clear against the sound of the ocean waves. “Yes, Adrian. A thousand times, yes.”
Adrian slipped the sapphire ring onto her finger—a perfect fit. Then he swept her into his arms, lifting her off her feet as his mouth came down on hers in a deep, passionate kiss that sealed their future under the open sky.
From across the lawn, Martha applauded joyfully, the teachers and children cheered, and Marcus raised a glass of champagne with a rare, beaming smile.

Looking out over the endless blue horizon of the Atlantic, Elise knew that the nightmare of her past was finally over. She had walked through the fire, she had faced the storm, and on the other side, she hadn't just survived.
She had found home."
