Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

The grand jury didn't even deliberate for an hour.
They returned a multi-count true bill of indictment against Brandon Cole, Dale Cole, and Linda Cole, charging them with attempted murder, aggravated assault causing permanent disability, witness tampering, felony child endangerment, federal wire fraud, and conspiracy to defraud the United States government.
Because of the overwhelming forensic proof, the federal judge denied bail for all three defendants, citing them as dangerous flight risks and threats to public safety.
Three months later, facing forty years in federal prison and overwhelming physical evidence, Brandon Cole cracked completely. To save himself from spending the rest of his life behind bars, he agreed to a plea bargain, pleading guilty to all counts and testifying against his own mother and uncle.
The subsequent trial of Dale and Linda Cole became the biggest legal spectacle the county had ever witnessed.
On the witness stand, Brandon broke down, weeping as he detailed how his mother, Linda, had orchestrated the financial embezzlement from Emily’s family inheritance, and how Linda had personally commanded him to break Emily’s leg so she couldn't attend the scheduled divorce hearing to freeze their accounts.
He confessed to how Dale had altered police incident logs, threatened hospital personnel, and falsified safety inspection reports for five years in exchange for kickbacks totaling over $450,000 hidden in offshore shell companies.
When the jury delivered their verdict, the gavel sounded like a guillotine.
Deputy Dale Cole was sentenced to twenty-eight years in federal penitentiary without the possibility of parole, his law enforcement pension completely forfeited to the state victim compensation fund.
Linda Cole, convicted of conspiracy to commit murder and felony child endangerment, was sentenced to twenty-two years at the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility. As the bailiffs cuffed her and led her away, she looked at me across the courtroom railing, her face withered, trembling, and utterly broken.
“You destroyed my family, Eleanor,” she wheezed through cracked lips.
“No, Linda,” I replied, looking her dead in the eye without a shred of pity. “You built your house on rot and cruelty. I just inspected the foundation.”

Brandon Cole was sentenced to eighteen years in a maximum-security state facility. Under the terms of the federal restitution judgment, every single asset belonging to Cole Valley Excavation, the ranch house, and their equipment was liquidated at public auction.
The entire proceeds—amounting to $2.4 million—were transferred into an irrevocable trust for Emily’s medical rehabilitation and Noah’s future college education.
